I was raised on pop music. I mean, let's just be honest - very few of us were given the Minutemen with our juiceboxes. But you start finding the other stuff over time - my family moved to Seattle and I integrated myself into a really cool local music community where no one genre necessarily dominated another. Or maybe the world gets bigger when you're a teenager. Some friends (who you may know from the late Racetrack and the still around Patience Please) and I formed a pop band with an unfortunate name when I was 14. When I wasn't allowed to change any settings on the amp I had to borrow for our first show, the pop band became a grungy, crunchy pop band. I fell in love with playing those kinds of songs. When the band ended (as they sometimes do), I began coming to terms with the concept of being a "solo artist." I went into the studio (Orbit Audio) a while later (there were, of course, assorted non-musical life happenings in the meantime - lackluster day-jobs, a premature trip through college, fucked up relationships and things like that) and recorded This is the Team with Joe Reineke (who's also worked on stuff for Pavement, Frank Black and School Yard Heroes) in charge of spaceship operations and Chris Thompson-Pratt (who did some severe rocking with Shook Ones) hitting drums like there was no tomorrow. I played everything else because I kind of had to. Not in a Billy Corgan way, but mostly in an, "I couldn't really find anyone else but I do know how my songs go," way. There are four songs on the EP. I think all of them are about being angry and disappointed but determined to hope. Some people think they're about loving people who don't love me back. Whatever works for you. The guitars are rather raunchy, which I like. (Which might be a little funny because I do frequently play solo and acoustic live. You should come see what that's like!) Some people say This is the Team reminds them of Liz Phair, others say Josie and the Pussycats (circa the movie with Rachel Leigh Cook and Tara Reid. But I think Letters to Cleo, or at least the girl from LTC, did the soundtrack?). Some people impress me by drawing parallels with non-female musical reference-points, like Ted Leo or Matthew Sweet or, "that one Jimmy Eat World song, you know?"Anyway, that was then and now I've gone away to LA for school and come back to Seattle where I am making my first full-length record with Phillip Peterson (who has done amazing work with Nada Surf, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, Tennis Pro, etc. and so on) and half of our favourite musicians. It's going to be pretty freakin' cool. You might actually like it.For now, though, you can get the This is the Team EP [here] or at one of my shows (or, in all likelihood, if you see me walking anywhere). But more importantly, be what you want, do something amazing and don't rely on anyone else to change your life/world/etc. for you - you are the team. Please keep the dream alive. $5.99 Local Musician launches second CD By: Hilary Lewis 10/26/2006 Joe Matz is finding success selling his music on line Joe Matz has been singing and writing music since he was four years old, but a few years ago, while going through what he called his "mid-life crisis", he finally started to record.Loan officer by day, Matz's true passion is his music and he has a long history in it.He started off performing in a contest at a local radio station back in the 60's and took third place. In high school, Matz continued to sing and play the guitar in several rock groups, but nothing ever seemed to work out. In 1974, he went out on his own. He traveled around the D.C. area and played clubs and bars all over. Most of the music he played were covers, but from time to time he would sneak in some of ...

This Is The Team album
$13.69 BIOGRAPHYTunde Olaniran was born to a socialist-activist American mother and Christian Nigerian immigrant father, living in Germany, Nigeria, and England before settling in Flint, MI for his late adolescence. The urban, folk, and soul influences he picked up in Flint melded with his mother's jazz influences, coming to a head when he decided to submit an audition videotape to the first annual Chicago Idol competition. Making it from over 1500 contestants to the final 15 (receiving props from a then-unknown Kanye West along the way), and sharing the stage with R. Kelly and Syleena Johnson, Tunde got a taste for what he would begin to pursue. That was in 2003. Now, with a journey that includes fronting a rock band with a growing fan base, recording two albums, producing and featuring vocals on various projects, Tunde finds himself with a collection of 18 original songs entitled "Infinite Modulation." His debut solo album, released at the end of 2006, is a rich blend of musical styles and influences, more than living up to its title. Weird. Soulful. Old school. Catchy. Uplifting. All of these words have been used by listeners to describe Tunde's sound. One moment, a chorus of vocals soar over a sitar raga, the next, Tunde sings quietly over a spare Casio keyboard, 808, and gulping tablas.Armed with a strange, wonderful new sound, solid vocals, and commanding stage presence, Tunde is prepared to share his music with the world.-----Reviews-----The Uncommon Senseby Mike AlbadoreIf you already know Tunde as the vocalist in local funk-rockers Taste This!, then you know what he's capable of on one level: he's a powerful, soulful singer blessed with a crystal clear tone. On his debut solo album, he applies that voice, his groovetastic production skills, and his eclectic musical taste to a genuinely impressive album that basically works within the hip-hop/modern R&B pop framework while remaining innovative and weird enough to give Missy Elliott whiplash. What's the difference between our struggling young hero and some millionaire pop star? One big difference between somebody like Tunde and the endless parade of snooze-inducing MCs and singers on the charts is a genuine fearless vulnerability to his singing that reminds me of a young Prince. He also doesn't substitute three minutes ...
| | Maggie Kim Rocktease CD (2006)
This Is The Team CD music
$15.89 âMs. Kim is very popular among Asian American fans because she is famous for breaking the stereotypes of Asian femalesâthat is, being quiet, passive, demure and submissive.â âThe Segye TimesâMaggie Kim is not shy. In one artful and admittedly racy press photo, the stylish rocker appears in a âtopâ composed of carefully arranged electrical tape. But unlike many provocative female musicians, Kim isnât using skin to distract from limited talent.â â The Washington PostâIâm never going to live down the electrical tape!â laughs Maggie Kim, about the now-infamous photo that opens her website. âTo me, that photo was artistic and fashion, not pornographic, but I guess it depends on how you choose to look at it.âMaggie Kim is one of the most provocative, prominent and successful Asian-American independent music artists today. She has carved a unique path for herself as a singer, songwriter, bassist, programmer and producer. Her first demos won the JANE Magazine/Maybelline Reader CD contest and her critically acclaimed first ...
