Scenes From My Life CD music
$13.89 The collaboration between African kora player Ablaye Cissoko and trumpeter Volker Goetze is a thing of real late-night beauty. It lives on the tipping point between West African music and ethereal, atmospheric European jazz. In many ways, the disc belongs to Cissoko, whose playing and singing on both traditional and original material powers the whole things, gently lulling everything along, with Goetze's contributions more minor, often punctuating and filling in the material. But it somehow manages to become more than the sum of its ...
| | Steve Goodman Artistic Hair CD (1983)
Scenes From My Life music CDs
$10.39 Steve Goodman's wry sense of humor is nicely summed up by the title of this album. ARTISTIC HAIR, it turns out, refers to the effects of chemotherapy, which Goodman underwent in the early 1980s during treatment for leukemia. Because of his illness, this collection of live recordings would be the last Steve Goodman album released during the singer-songwriter's lifetime.
For those unfamiliar with Goodman, ARTISTIC HAIR is a good place to begin. Unlike his studio efforts, many of which are overproduced, ARTISTIC HAIR features only Goodman's virtuoso guitar playing, with occasional contributions from mandolin great Jethro Burns. Furthermore, the disc includes fine versions of many of Goodman's signature songs, including "Elvis Imitators," "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" (a hilarious send-up of country songs that Goodman co-wrote with buddy John Prine), and of course "City of New Orleans," which was a monster hit for Arlo Guthrie. Goodman's strong suits are his humor and chops, but he acquits himself wonderfully ...
| | Nicholas Gunn Music Of The Grand Canyon CD (1995)
Scenes From My Life songs
$13.45 While Nicholas Gunn hails from England, his heart is in the deserts of the American Southwest. Despite common associations with this arid region, Gunn's music never sounds desolate or forbidding. In contrast, each track on THE MUSIC OF THE GRAND CANYON is bursting with activity and color.
Gunn's compositions are influenced by Native American music, specifically that of the Navajo. Tracks such as "Moonlight On Havasu Creek" and "Phantom Ranch" even employ tribal rhythms and distant chanting. Other selections such as "New World" and "Four Worlds" feature the Spanish guitar. Additionally, "Grand Canyon" includes a narrative history of the region. Despite this, Gunn's flute remains the centerpiece of each selection and his extroverted style combines native flute traditions with New Age atmospherics. ...
| | Christy Baron Take This Journey CD (2002)
Scenes From My Life album
$16.55 Christy Baron's third CD for Chesky is promoted by liner note writer David Finck (who plays bass and wrote two of the originals on this session) as featuring a singer who is a "true communicator." While she is a pleasant singer, she fits more into pop (or AAA, for those who classify by radio terminology) than into jazz. The excessive reliance on empty pop songs, especially the three bland works by Carole King and the friendly but banal "Happy Together" (a huge hit for the Turtles in the 1960s) make this disc of minimal interest to serious jazz fans. There are some successful detours into standards ...
| | Jump Or Die CD (1994)
Scenes From My Life CD music
$9.55 When this album appeared in 1994, the general reaction was, "It's about time!" Over the previous 25 or so years, Anthony Braxton had created several hundred compositions that, despite their unique combinations of beauty and complexity, were rarely covered. Even better, the two San Francisco-based groups who came together for this project took advantage of one of Braxton's major conceptual developments of the '80s: the idea of having individual members of his ensembles being able to play any of his pieces at any time during a performance, treating his repertoire as a vast well to be freely sampled. So listeners have the gorgeous "Composition 23D" (fondly recalled as side one, cut three from Braxton's classic Arista release, New York, Fall 1974) lovingly read with baritone and vibes in front and gradually blended in with the abstract "Composition 108," ushered in by bass and drums. It's a good example of how complicated and even jolting this approach can be, even to those familiar with Braxton's music. On the original "Composition 23D," during the recapitulation of the theme (and expansion on it), there's a wonderful interplay between the lead horns and rhythm. Here, the bass and drums are off in another territory entirely, forcing ...
