In 2008 popster Natasha Bedingfield dropped a finely constructed, hook-filled effort in POCKETFUL OF SUNSHINE. Rootsy and groove-oriented, but with plenty of contemporary R&B studio polish (a combo especially evident on the reggae-inflected standout "Love Like This," featuring Sean Kingston), POCKETFUL manages to be both laid-back and glamorous at once.
Bedingfield is equally adept at breezy, catchy dance-pop (the title track) as she is at heart-tugging love ballads ("Soulmate"). What was impressive about the Natalie Imbruglia album Glorious: The Singles 1997-2007 was that Imbruglia had a writing or co-writing credit on 13 of the 14 tracks, the only one not penned by her being the one that started it all, the classic "Torn." Starting at the most unlikely source as an actress on the daytime TV soap opera Neighbours (although it had produced singing stars a decade earlier with Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan), Imbruglia had carved out a singing career with a series of pop/rock singles with superb melodies, although never managing to top the exquisiteness of the single "Torn." Following up two folk-flavored albums, MAGIC finds Bruce Springsteen laying down his acoustic guitar to reclaim his rock-hero crown. He's assisted in this endeavor by producer Brendan O'Brien, best-known for big-time '90s hard rock, but the results have little in common with O'Brien's grungy past. Instead, MAGIC's sonic blueprint is more in line with Bruce's last stadium-rock statement, 2002's THE RISING. The album is front-loaded with hard-charging, heavy-riffing tunes ("Radio Nowhere," "You'll Be Comin' Down") that benefit from the sure-fire attack of the E Street Band. Formed in the late 1970s by a group of Los Angeles session musicians (including keyboardist/vocalist David Paich, guitarist/vocalist Steve Lukather, and lead vocalist Bobby Kimball), Toto turned the ensemble's collective industry experiences into meticulously crafted pop-tinged rock. Although the band achieved only a handful of hits--most notably the urgent "Hold the Line," the lightly funky "Rosanna," and the soaring "Africa"--they proved to be massive singles. This well-selected 2003 compilation is frontloaded with those radio staples, and also presents standout tracks from other Toto albums, while wisely avoiding songs from maligned records such as TURN BACK and ISOLATION. The result is a disc that perfectly lives up to its name, making it ideal for casual fans of the long-running band.
