Box album
$14.29 If you're going to have a career in music, it's important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Being great at one thing doesn't automatically mean a person is great (or even competent) at another; the history of music is full of excellent guitarists, bassists, drummers, and horn players who turned out to be mediocre or lousy vocalists when -- for whatever reason -- they decided to take up singing. But Larry Taylor has no problem making the transition from drummer to singer on They Were in This House, the Chicago blues/soul veteran's first album as a leader. Taylor, who was 48 when this release came out in 2004, is no newcomer; he has been around the Windy City blues scene a long time and has played the drums for a long list of blues heavyweights over the years. But as a recording artist/singer, he was a late bloomer -- and while Taylor doesn't have a huge vocal range, he is an expressive, convincing vocalist who has no problem getting his emotional points across on either hardcore electric Chicago blues or hardcore soul. Taylor handles himself pleasingly well on blues items like Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor," Elmore James' "Knocking at Your Door," and Jimmy Reed's "Signals of Love" ...
| | Li'l Ronnie & The Grand Dukes Do What Cha Do CD (2005)
Box CD music
$16.45 Li'l Ronnie & the Grand Dukes are, to quote one reviewer "the real deal...superb talents well versed in traditional blues"Following on the footsteps of their critically acclaimed CD, 'Young & Evil' Ronnie and the band have really hit their stride with their third release, 'do what 'cha do'. The new disc features 11 original songs written or co-written by Ronnie and band mate Michael Dutton. 'do what 'cha do' is produced by their old friend and blues master Anson Funderburgh. It's their best work to date and having Anson in the producer's chair was a wise decision. Anson brought with him a wealth of experience and an understanding of what the band is all about. He certainly helped capture the band as close to 'live' as possible and that's the only way to fully appreciate this talented band of blues veterans. The band goes from primitive 1 chord blues romps, Chicago harmonica blues to West Coast jump blues and all parts in-between. They are led by veteran singer / songwriter and Hohner Harmonica endorsee Ronnie Keith Owens.Ronnie has been performing since the early 60's and has been fronting his own bands for over 25 years. He has shared the stage & played with some of the biggest ...

| | Superman-The Movie Superman: The Movie CDs (1978)
Box music CDs
$41.89 John Williams was the man of the moment in soundtrack music from 1977 onward, and Superman: The Movie was very much the culmination of his first wave of international renown. Casting aside his over-reliance on the works of Holst, Ravel, and Korngold, he delivered up a score that still -- 30-plus years later -- is lively, playful, mysterious, and, most of all, stylistically original and filled with unexpected touches that still surprise when heard as pure music. Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra by this time played like he was joined telepathically to the musicians, and also recognized just how closely and widely ...

| | George Cables Letter To Dexter CD (2006)
Box music CDs
$14.35 Pianist George Cables, who spent some of his formative years accompanying saxophone great Dexter Gordon, pays tribute to the man with a nicely varied collection of tunes written by or associated with Gordon, A Letter to Dexter. His trio is filled out by fellow Gordon alumni Rufus Reid on bass and drummer Victor Lewis, both of them now giants in their own right. Cables has a decorous and romantic playing style, and combined with a rhythm section as mighty as this one, the results should be magnificent. And so they are, at least most of the time. Unfortunately, there are occasional moments when the rhythmic thread is lost and the groove falters. This usually happens during piano solos: listen carefully, for example, to the way the bass and drums wander off-groove during Cables' first chorus on "Fried Bananas." But most of the album is a delight. The trio's take on the Gordon composition "Cheesecake" ...
