Elvis Costello & the Attractions: Bruce Thomas (bass guitar); Pete Thomas (drum); Steve Nieve.
With his seventh album, IMPERIAL BEDROOM, Elvis Costello was hailed as being more than just a New Wave rocker. With intricate, Beatlesque arrangements and unusual, sophisticated song structures, Costello emerged as full-blown master craftsman. Some of the more excitable critics of the day declared him a modern Cole Porter. Indeed, it's possible to imagine some 1940s torch singer crooning the slinky "The Long Honeymoon" or the mournful "Kid About It," but the free-associative, polyrhythmic likes of "Beyond Belief" and "Shabby Doll" had never been heard anywhere in pop music before.
Undeniably one of Costello's finest hours as a tunesmith, IMPERIAL BEDROOM shows several sides of his musical personality. He's roots-conscious enough to pen a perfect jazz ballad ("Almost Blue," later covered by Chet Baker), but adventurous enough to push the lyrical and harmonic envelope even farther than on his rococo masterpiece, ARMED FORCES.
Personnel: Steve Nieve (piano, organ); Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar).

Imperial Bedroom album
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other ...
| | Roger Daltrey Daltrey CD (1973) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered; United Kingdom
Imperial Bedroom CD music
$13.15 Although Roger Daltrey was by no means the first member of the Who to take the solo plunge (both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend beat him to the punch), he was the first to make any kind of commercial impact. While "Giving It All Away" peeled off his self-titled debut album to hit the U.K. Top Five, the album itself went Top 50 in America and, almost as an afterthought, introduced the writing talents of the young and then-unknown Leo Sayer to the public at large. Eight months ahead of his own breakthrough hit, "The Show Must Go On," Sayer and writing partner Dave Courtney composed eight of Daltrey's ten tracks; Courtney co-produced the album with Adam Faith, then wrote the remaining pair with Faith himself. Of Sayer's contributions, both "Giving It All Away" and the opening "One Man Band" would subsequently reappear on his own Just a Boy album, itself titled for the chorus line of "Giving It All Away." Daltrey's majestically plaintive rendition remains the definitive version, however, all the more so when linked with the "It's a Hard Life" lament that serves as prelude to the song on Daltrey. Far ...

$12.65 Elvis Costello & the Attractions: Bruce Thomas (bass guitar); Pete Thomas (drum); Steve Nieve.
Following the frenzied pop-soul of Get Happy!!, Elvis Costello & the Attractions quickly returned to the studio and recorded Trust, their most ambitious and eclectic album to date. As if he were proving his stylistic diversity and sophistication after the concentrated genre experiment of Get Happy!!, Costello assembled Trust as a stylistic tour de force, packing the record with a wild array of material. "Clubland" has jazzy flourishes, "Lovers' Walk" rolls to a Bo Diddley beat, "Luxembourg" is rockabilly redux, "Watch Your Step" is soul-pop, "From a Whisper to a Scream" rocks as hard as anything since This Year's Model, "Shot with His Own Gun" is Tin Pan Alley pop, "Different Finger" is the first country ...
