Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Amaray Case This elaborate production upholds the tradition set by the many opulent biblical epics of Hollywood.
The tale centers on Micah, the "Prodigal" of the title. He gives in to greedy impulses and recklessly spends his share of his father's riches on Samorra, the high priestess of Astarte. Micah wants her to wed him and leave behind her pagan gods.
Ultimately, though, it appears that the prodigal son will not forsake his allegiance to Jehovah and must begin his journey home.
Or can he be swayed? Based on the parable of "The Prodigal Son," the story unfolds into an unforgettable tale of lust and retribution. Additional credit: Joe Breen Jr. and Samuel James Larsen (source writers: from Bible story).

| | Little Caesar DVD (1930) Full Frame; Subtitled
Prodigal review
$14.85 With its focus on character flaws instead of plot devices, LITTLE CAESAR is the mother of the modern gangster flick. Edward G. Robinson stars as Enrico Bandelli in the role that made him a household name. Bandelli moves to the big city with partner in crime Joe Massara (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) and becomes a member of Sam Vettori's Mafia gang. In spite of the urgings of pretty girl Olga Strassoff (Glenda Farell) to quit the mob, Rico quickly becomes the head of the Vettori gang and with a couple of quick kills scares mob boss Arnie Lorch back to Detroit. Bandelli, dubbed Little Caesar by the press, is known as a boss in his own right, but what goes up must come down in this tale of excessive hubris. At the time of its release, the stacatto sound design for LITTLE CAESAR was leagues ahead of its early talkie contemporaries. But what keeps the film alive is the fine script and the startling performance from Edward G. Robinson.

$10.49 This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense range in what was arguably his finest role ever as the sometimes unrecognizably scruffy circus man with a liking for the bottle. Director Edmund Goulding (DARK VICTORY) gives the carnival setting a dark, somber feel that contradicts the film's more upbeat ending. In spite of this ending tacked on by the studio system, NIGHTMARE ALLEY remains with the viewer ...

Prodigal movie DVD
$13.55 Director Ron Howard, who impressed audiences with BACKDRAFT (1991) and A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001), has outdone himself with THE MISSING, a wrenching family drama that unfolds in the midst of a classic 1880s Western. This extraordinarily beautiful film offers astounding panoramic photography and inspired performances that enrich a truly hair-raising journey. As ever, Cate Blanchett brings intense realism to the role of Maggie Gilkeson, a New Mexico cattle rancher who dabbles in the healing arts. Her long-estranged father Samuel Jones (Tommy Lee Jones) is mistaken for an Indian when he inexplicably shows up on her property hoping for reconciliation; he abandoned his family years earlier to adopt a Native American identity. An embittered Maggie sends him away, but capitulates when her eldest daughter Lilly (Evan Rachel Wood) is kidnapped by a band of psychotic Apache killers. When the local sheriff and the U.S. Army balk at chasing the perpetrators, a desperate Maggie turns to her father, praying he is sufficiently savvy in tribal ways to save her daughter.
Blanchett and Jones clearly own this movie, and are both superb. Wunderkind child actor Jenna Boyd is spectacular as Maggie's youngest daughter, Dot. Also noteworthy are a brief but poignant cameo by Val Kilmer as an apathetic ...

$10.05 The Fitzgerald sisters are back in the third installment of the wonderfully horrific Canadian werewolf series, and this time they've travelled back in time, manifest in one of their previous incarnations. Orphans traveling across the Canadian wilderness by horseback during the 19th Century, the girls encounter a crumbling Indian campsite where the one remaining inhabitant issues a strange prophetic warning, the first of many mysterious encounters to come. When the sisters take refuge at a trading fort populated only by men, they soon learn of the monstrous beasts in the outlying land that menace the men both physically and mentally, as many seem to be moving towards madness and all seem to have something to hide. When Ginger is bitten by a little boy and starts slowly changing, the sisters realize they must work to solve the prophecy before its too late.
This film, providing a backstory for characters introduced in the first two films of the series, offers stunning cinematography by Michael Marshall, known for his work with gifted Canadian director Guy Maddin, and superb performances by all the actors, including many respected indie stars. The series has been a cult favorite since the first GINGER SNAPS in 2000, and this film is more than just another werewolf horror flick; it has a little of everything: fantastic gore and great action ...
