| | Sun Caged Artemisia CD - Import Sun Caged Discography of CDs
Back with a virtually new line-up, yet a musical nod to the past, Sun Caged return with Artemisia, their second album and four years after their self titled debut (LMC070). Since the debut the band have seen almost wholesale changes in personnel with only guitarist and band founder Marcel Coenen remaining from the debut. Yet the typical Sun Caged sound is still present, if anything even richer with even more different sounds and styles than heard on the debut. The new band members and Coenen have delved deep to deliver an album that acts on creative impulses, without limiting themselves to the standard bag of tricks often heard in the progressive genre. Artemisia delivers an album full of unstoppable vocal melody, virtuoso guitar work, odd time signatures and complex chord sequences all topped off with an ultra powerful production Sun Caged Artemisia Songs | 1. | Lyre's Harmony |

Artemisia
$9.79 On its second full-length album, Swedish quartet Andromeda has produced a prog metal record that, while incorporating a few fresh-sounding ideas, ultimately collapses under the weight of its indulgences. Some attention-grabbing moments in the beginning of the album get things off to a promising start, but are quickly forgotten as the record sinks into a quagmire of instrumental excess. Fans of the genre should find some moments to appreciate here, but only those with great patience. ~ Andy Hinds

| | Sun Caged CD (2006) (Import) Finland
Artemisia
$18.55 The self-titled Sun Caged is a progressive metal masterpiece mixed by Arjen Lucassen from Holland's perhaps finest band in this genre to date. Killer production, fantastic songs and superb performances mark one of the best releases from Lion Music ever! Sun Caged is progressive metal in the vein of Dream Theater, Ayreon and Symphony X. When guitarist Marcel Coenen (ex-Lemur Voice) and drummer Dennis Leeflang (ex-Within Temptation) accidentally meet in late 1998 and the two discover their common interests in music, Coenen invites Leeflang to join a jam-session on new year's day 1999. After a successful gig, both agree it should be interesting to write some material together. Sun Caged then formed in the spring of 1999. Those who try to describe Sun Caged's ...
| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
Artemisia
$10.59 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE and their breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS. "Sacrificed Sons" captures the heartbreak of the 9/11 tragedy, while the grandiose title track showcases a melodic, Styx-inspired keyboard solo by Jordan Rudess (better known for a blisteringly frenetic style). Twenty years since their inception, Dream Theater prevails as the benchmark ...

$21.19 Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.
Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than most bands bother with over a ten album career. In fact, "Whither," a tender ballad and mere babe at five minutes in length, is the album's only concession ...
| | Michael Franks Sleeping Gypsy CD (1977)
Artemisia
$5.79 After the success of The Art of Tea, Michael Franks was able to more confidently move closer to the kind of music he wanted to make. Employing a more exotic Brazilian feel on Sleeping Gypsy, with lush orchestration (courtesy of veteran jazz arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman), Franks moved his acoustic guitar work to the background to create a romantic sound with no sappiness. With "Down in Brazil" and, particularly, "Antonio's Song," his ode to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Franks was doing with Brazilian music for the rock crowd in the '70s what Stan Getz did for the jazz crowd in the '60s. He again employed his witty wordplay and evocative storytelling ability on "B'wana-He No Home," a song about a time when Dan Hicks was staying at his house while Franks was away. A romantic, elegant and important album in bringing Brazilian music to a wider audience. ~ Steve Matteo

| | 20 Minute Loop Yawn + House = Explosion CD (2005)
Artemisia
$12.09 The third album by Bay Area five-piece 20 Minute Loop is as willfully quirky as their first two, but while it retains the band's signature tendency to spin out into entirely new directions mid-song, the songwriting and the arrangements are overall considerably tighter than before. Singers Kelly Atkins and Greg Giles used to tend to sing at each other more than with, but the intertwining vocal lines on songs like "Parking Lot" are far superior to their earlier efforts; this time, when the harmonies clash (as on the ominously creepy "Our William Tell"), it's clear that they mean for them to. Similarly, an economy of ideas in the arrangements helps the songs sound full and varied rather than wildly overstuffed. The high-concept kicker comes at the end, with a cover of Hüsker Dü's "I'll Never Forget You" done in mock rock-epic style complete with grandiose horn section, but the ten literate, funny, and offhandedly brilliant songs that came before are what you'll come back to. ~ Stewart Mason
20 Minute Loop is an alternately manic and intimate pop experience: seamless boy-girl harmonies with glimpses of the carnivalesque, dashes of the joy and melancholy, and plenty of catchy choruses. With this CD, 20 Minute Loop takes their craft a ...
