Young Puccini album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on "Interlude with Ludes," there's the sense ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Young Puccini CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, ...

Young Puccini album
$49.49 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain."
Having been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, new guitarist Mick Taylor parlayed his experience into some impressive slide guitar work. The pièce-de-resistance of ...

Young Puccini album
$11.39 If the Lilith Fair tour/festival were still in existence, Chris Pureka would certainly have been asked to be part of the roster. With her acoustic guitar and understated voice leading the charge, Pureka's sound and style sound very similar to such Lilith veterans as the Indigo Girls -- as evidenced by 2004's Driving North. The follow-up to Pureka's 2001 self-titled EP shows the singer/songwriter penning songs that appear to be autobiographical from a lyrical standpoint -- tracks such as "Silo Song" and "Porch Songs" focus on the theme of growing up in a small town, while "3 A.M." and "Afterall" focus on relationships. And although several guest musicians dropped by the sessions, Pureka's voice and guitar plucking and strumming remain the focal point throughout. ~ Greg Prato
[ Originally published on: Thursday, May 06, 2004 ]TALES OF NORTHERN CLIMES: Northampton songwriter Chris Pureka's new CD, ''Driving North,'' arrives with the chill of a retreating winter's last exhale. In its sparseness, her recording seems a woman's updating of Springsteen's ''Nebraska.'' The 11 tightly coiled compositions ride low emotionally, but rock with rhythms of the road. A performer like Pureka gets to see a lot of the road these days, now that she and her guitar are in demand - she has dates next week in Oregon, where she will open for Kris Delmhorst and headline at a women's festival. Tonight, though, she enchants a hometown crowd at the Iron Horse in Northampton, ...
