From out of nowhere, Fabolous swooped onto the hip-hop scene in summer 2001 with this big-money debut album and a sure-fire hit ("Can't Deny It"). It also didn't hurt that Fabolous' rhymes happen to fit right in the with the zeitgeist of the moment, exhibiting somewhat of an East Coast variation of the bling bling style synonymous with Southern rap. Besides Jay-Z's occasional departure into materialism and/or hedonism ŕ la "I Just Wanna Love U," the East Coast didn't really have a young, icy player -- at least not since the popular downfall of Bad Boy following the Notorious B.I.G.'s death. Maggie Cheung won the best actress award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival for her performance in writer/director (and ex-husband) Olivier Assayas' Clean, and one can assume that some part of that award is owed to her singing of four songs in the film, songs that anchor this "music from the motion picture" soundtrack. On her debut solo album after three duo records with Chip Taylor, singer/songwriter and fiddle player Carrie Rodriguez offers a mixture of her diverse musical background, which is rooted in Southwest country and blues styles but also boasts a sophistication nurtured at the Berklee College of Music. Rodriguez tends to de-emphasize her fiddle work in favor of an ensemble sound and her own singing, which employs a rural Southern accent that is liable to remind listeners of Lucinda Williams. Unlike Williams, however, she is more interested in setting moods and creating musical textures than in rocking out. This album is the first recording with my 38-string harp guitar Big Red, built by my good friend Fred Carlson in Santa Cruz, California. Big Red’s body is constructed primarily of Alirecel, or aliphatic resin cellulose laminate, a fancy way of saying papier-mâché. Antonio de Torres, luthier of legend, once fabricated a six-string guitar via paper and glue. He reasoned the top is what most contributes to the tone of a guitar, so he used for that aspect fine wood; the instrument still exists more than 100 years later, and is said to rival in sonority any conventionally constructed guitar of the period. Following de Torres, Big Red’s top is salvaged redwood, the main neck and sub-bass extension are reinforced maple, and the fingerboard is fretless in the lower regions, with conventional fretting on up from the 7th fret position. The instrument also has a zither-like super-treble section and resonating sympathetic strings in the manner of my H’arpeggione. Big Red is played upright on a spike, though at heart it is a baritone classical guitar with piano on the brain. I chose to approach this Big Red reveal with the most transparency I could muster.
