| | Five Finger Death Punch War Is The Answer CD (2009)
Evilution
$11.59 Lyricists: Mick Ralphs; Paul Rogers . Personnel: Ivan Moody (vocals); Zoltan Bathory, Jason Hook (guitar); Jeremy Spencer (drums). Audio Mixers: Randy Staub ; Kevin Churko. Recording information: Gump Punch Studios, Las Vegas (04/2009-06/2009); Hit Track Studios, Las Vegas (04/2009-06/2009); The Dojo, Las Vegas (04/2009-06/2009). Five Finger Death Punch stormed rock radio in 2007 with "The Bleeding" (from debut album THE WAY OF THE FIST), a powerful, emotionally tense track that matched vintage, Metallica-style thrash with a throat-shredding chorus more typical of late aughts metalcore. The Los Angeles-based band's sophomore disc WAR IS THE ANSWER mines much of the same territory as that breakout song, keeping the flame of the classic `80s Four Horsemen sound alive with snap-tight chugga-chugga guitar rhythms, minor-key, classical music-inspired clean/acoustic passages, and vocals dripping with ...
| | Between The Buried And Me The Great Misdirect CD (2009)
Evilution
$11.49 Lyricist: Tommy Rogers. Personnel: Tommy Rogers (vocals, keyboards); Dustie Waring (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, slide guitar); Dan Briggs (fretless bass); Blake Richardson (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Jamie King. Photographer: Chuck Johnson . After Between the Buried and Me pushed metalcore purists away with their most progressive release, COLORS, they decided to push even harder for their fifth release. A diverse outing with an unruly amount of genres crammed into only six songs, THE GREAT MISDIRECT is a highly adventurous, very convoluted, wildly dynamic, and extremely difficult listen. Briggs, Waring, Rogers, Waggoner, and Richardson ...

| | Atrophy Violent By Nature CD (1990)
Evilution
$12.19 Its wacky-silly cover artwork (featuring some kind in a skull-mask) doesn't help matters, but Arizona thrashers Atrophy actually took a tentative step forward with their second album, 1990s Violent by Nature, which showed greater diversity and a more refined sense of musicianship, while sacrificing just a tad of their debut's raucous aggression. Unfortunately, these improvements were not nearly enough to help the quintet distinguish themselves from the hundreds of thrash metal outfits bubbling just under the surface of what had become a fatally crowded pond. Especially given Atrophy's demanding brand of technical thrash, which tended to suffocate listeners with its airtight arrangements and tuneless walls of riffs (think Bay Area bruisers like Vio-Lence and Forbidden, or even Anthrax's incomparably overwrought Persistence of Time album) -- not to mention often humorless, socio-political diatribes which ensured that even amusingly named ...
| | Rogana Story CD (2007)
Evilution
$9.55 Liner Note Author: Fred James. German label SPV's retrospective of blues sides from record man William "Hossman" Allen's various labels features music from legends such as Johnny Copeland, Gatemouth Brown, and Scotty Moore, as well as relatively more obscure names such as Art Grayson, Tiny Watkins, and the Beat Boys. The focus here is certainly on the blues, but there are also doses of hep-cat R&B (the Beat Boys' "Flip End"), pop soul (Frank Howard's "Smokey Places"), ballads (Lucille Watkins's "Somewhere Out There"), and novelty songs (Hoss Allen himself's "He Went to the Top of the Mountain," a sermon-style gospel tribute to the Reverend Martin Luther King). If the name Rogana Records doesn't ring a bell, there's a good reason why: the label didn't really exist. William "Hoss" Allen was a disc jockey, music publisher, TV presenter, and record man working in Nashville in the mid-'60s who ran a small record label, Hermitage Records. When Allen began finding more talent than Hermitage had the resources to release, he founded Rogana Records as a production company that would lease its masters to other labels rather than distribute product itself. Two dozen Rogana productions are featured on this archival collection from SPV Records, and while the company didn't score many hits or establish many stars, there are a few notable names and pleasant surprises to be ...
