BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer's follow-up to their acclaimed 1998 debut, Tanglewood Tree is a truly potent mix of outstanding country harmonies, exemplary musicianship, and complex narratives. The compositions here provide ample evidence of Carter's much deserved reputation in folk circles as one of the most talented singer/songwriters, as he colors an amazingly rich rural landscape, mixing elements of Native American mysticism with tales of the paradoxes of love and the musings of people in transition, always treating his characters with an honest, understated dignity. Featuring a much fuller sound than their previous record When I Go, Carter and Grammer employ session men and the use of a professional studio for the first time, with the results being a texturally rich collaboration that perfectly showcase Carter's pleasant finger-picking guitar style, as well as his banjo and Hammond organ flourishes. Tracy Grammer plays a larger role than on previous releases, as she sings lead on four tracks in addition to adding beautiful violin and mandolin accompaniment. The sunny, gently rolling "Happytown (All Right With Me)" is one of the more unabashedly melodic pieces, with each vocal turn yielding pure folk-pop bliss. Finger-picked guitar ballads, like "Farewall to Saint Dolores" or the bittersweet "Walking Away From Caroline," reveal a songwriter who is easily adept at avoiding the more maudlin tendencies of many of his contemporaries. The wit and humor in Carter's songwriting can almost be overshadowed by the starkness in tales like "Cat-Eye Willie Claims His Lover," a tragic account of a man who wins a woman in a card game and ends up being killed by her. Two Capitol LPs are reissued in full on this CD. Howard Roberts, a talented jazz guitarist from the 1950s who chose to become a studio musician, is in fine form on these selections, playing soul-jazz and swinging hard bop with a pair of quartets that have either Paul Bryant or Burkley Kendrix on organ. At the time these albums were released (they were both recorded in 1963), one could be excused for shying away from them because they both clocked in at barely a half-hour apiece and the individual selections were all quite concise, almost always less than three minutes apiece. The latter was on purpose so the numbers could be played on AM radio. But as it turned out, Roberts and his group did an excellent job of making every moment count, playing concise but self-sufficient arrangements and taking short but meaningful solos.
