Believer album
$14.80 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once again all originals, sometimes composed in conjunction with collaborators including her longtime colleagues Jesse Harris, Ryan Adams, and Will Sheff of Okkervil River. In addition to King's ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Believer CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Similarly engaging are his renditions of such rock-oriented tunes as Elton John's "Your Song," his low-key version of Don McLean's "And I Love You So," and the Carpenters' ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr What A Night! A Christmas Album CD (2008)
Believer music CDs
$10.99 With his silken, suave, self-assured vocals recalling a cross between Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr. has a natural voice for celebrating Christmastime. So it's no surprise that with the 2008 holiday season in full swing, Connick returns with his third holiday record, the sprightly WHAT A NIGHT! A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. As it is with his non-Yuletide LPs, WHAT A NIGHT! is a medley of his nimble, elegant takes on time-tested classics and disarming originals. The set opens on Connick's vibrant re-envisioning of "It's the Most Wonderful Time ...

| | Best Of Ella Firzgerald And Louis Armstrong On Verve CD (1997)
Believer album
$6.55 Principally recorded at Capitol Studios, The Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, California from August 15, 1956 - August 28, 1957. Includes liner notes by William Ruhlmann.
From August 1956 to August 1957, legendary jazz producer Norman Granz oversaw several recording sessions and a handful of concerts at the Hollywood Bowl starring two of the finest singers in jazz history, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Fitzgerald was at the peak of her powers at the time, having clearly defined herself as the best female singer in jazz. Armstrong was comfortably settling into his Grand Old Man of Jazz role by this point, trading hot swing and fiery trumpet solos for genial, good-humored vocalizing.
Still, Armstrong was never one to back off from a challenge, and he holds his own divinely against the younger singer. Fitzgerald ...

Believer music CDs
$13.39 Bill Douglas is the major contributor to this, Vol. 1 of the Hearts of Space label's Celtic Twilight series. The series builds from Hearts of Space's affection for swirling, soothing new age, layering instruments like fiddle and dulcimer into the sound. The result is better understood as new age with Celtic overtones. Douglas, Mychael Danna, and John Boswell lead the charge for Hearts of Space, and they're joined by kindred spirits like Steven McDonald ("Eastlander") and ...

| | Charlie Parker Best Of The Complete Live Performances On Savoy CD (2002)
Believer CD music
$11.89 The Best of the Complete Live Performances on Savoy recaptures the remarkable Charlie Parker in the late '40s leading his superb ensembles in an historic engagement over Labor Day weekend in 1948 at the Royal Roost. This distillation is a single volume of a four-CD Savoy reissue which in a way samples the total picture of the performances which ran for about four months -- from December 1948 to March 1949. The CD also includes the actual "live" radio broadcasts which were presided over by Sid Torin and feature a young Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, the great Max Roach, Al Haig, Milt Jackson, and Lucky Thompson, among others. Just think, the admission was just 90 cents! Among its many exceptional offerings, this assessment documents many of Parker's greatest performances, each featuring a network of melodic formulas that have been combined to create solos. His solos are often related to the original themes in unexpected and sometime ingenious ways (i.e., "Groovin' High,""Chasin' the Bird" -- which is the very last evidence of the working quintet with both Davis and Roach -- "Salt Peanuts," and "52nd Street Theme"). With "Anthropology," Parker ups the ante with a very fast tempo and 96 bars of invention. This is the latest in a magnificent body of jazz works reissued by Savoy, and ...
