Part of a Fantasy sampler series that features musicians (and in this case a notable vocalist) performing the blues, this CD features Ella Fitzgerald on 11 performances taken from a variety of sessions. Although she never specialized in the blues, Ella had no difficulty swinging over blues changes and sometimes putting strong emotion into the lowdown variety. There is one song apiece from the 1950s and '60s, while the remainder of the program dates from 1971-79. Ella's rendition of "C-Jam Blues" at the Santa Monica Civic in 1972 is a true classic, and other highlights include "Duke's Place" (with Duke Ellington's Orchestra in 1966), "I'm Walkin'," and the lengthy "Basiella," with Count Basie's big band. Although this excellent album is listed as a Duke Ellington, equal billing should be given to the participation of Charles Mingus and Max Roach. The remastered CD is outstanding, having been cleaned up from the original master tape. The CD also has the addition of six extra tracks, including four unheard Ellington originals: "Very Special," "Rem Blues," "Switch Blade," and "Backward Country Boy Blues." He is as at home in the setting of a trio as he is with a wailing big-band, and as usual, he allows the other musicians to play. The trio version of "Caravan" is exceptional, raucous and swinging. Duke Ellington surprised the jazz world in 1962 with his historic trio session featuring Charles Mingus and Max Roach. Not in a mood to simply rework older compositions, the bulk of the original LP focused on music he wrote specifically for the session. "Money Jungle" is a thunderous opener, a blues that might be classified somewhere between post-bop and avant-garde. With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments brings a rich texture to every song he graces. (He also co-wrote the best new songs, "Nossa Senhora" and "Ela [On My Way].") Also appearing is superstar producer Mark Ronson for the single "The Real Thing," a song whose history hits a sweet spot here--Stevie Wonder originally wrote it in the late '70s for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77. Bud Powell was known for the erratic nature of his recording sessions and live performances, but when he was on, as during this 1962 live date aired by Lausanne Radio, there was no stopping him. Accompanied by bassist Bob Jaquillard and drummer Mike Stevenot (hardly recognizable names compared to Powell's frequent collaborators in Europe, Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke, though their support of Powell is excellent), the pianist delivers enjoyable renditions of classics written by other greats of bop, including "Anthropology," "Billie's Bounce," "'Round Midnight," "I Remember Clifford," and "Blues in the Closet" (also known as "Collard Greens and Black-Eyed Peas").
