| | Peter White Good Day CD (2009)
Angel Eyes CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years ...

| | Boney James Boney's Funky Christmas CD (1996)
Angel Eyes CD music
$7.19 Working with producer Paul Brown, Boney James' Boney's Funky Christmas is an entertaining set of loose, funky and bluesy interpretations of both classic Christmas carols ("The Christmas Song") and more obscure contemporary selections like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas." Two selections, "This Christmas" ...
| | Sonny Rollins Old Flames CD (1993)
Angel Eyes music CDs
$9.89 Throughout his remarkable career, Sonny Rollins has betrayed a restless nature, unwilling to accept anything but continual growth and refinement. Thus we witness his periodic musical and spiritual sabbaticals, the constant shuffling of personnel, and his commitment to a deeper understanding of harmony. In the twenty-plus years since his return to the jazz wars, his sound has undergone an extraordinary evolution: the richness of his timbre, the variety of attacks, the layering of overtones and inflections--it's as if that immense, solid beam of light he projected in the 1950s had been run through a prism, and broken into all its spectral components. OLD FLAMES finds Rollins looking back with autumnal grandeur upon the great love songs of his youth, still looking for fresh, modern ways of interpreting these classics.
To that end he collaborates with the great saxophonist and composer Jimmy Heath, whose deep brass charts add tonal depth and burnished harmonic motion to "Darn That Dream" and "Prelude To A Kiss." On the former, Heath shades Rollins' gusty melodic effusions and ...
| | Ella Fitzgerald Best Of The Songbooks: The Ballads CD (1994)
Angel Eyes songs
$9.89 Though her career stretched from the '30s to the '80s and she's widely considered possibly the greatest female jazz singer or all time, Ella Fitzgerald will probably forever be best known for a mid-'50s collection of albums collectively called the Songbooks, where she devoted entire albums to the works of such composers as Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, and Duke Ellington. THE BEST OF THE SONGBOOKS: THE BALLADS is one of the many compilations based on these recordings, and one of the best.
From its beautiful, informative packaging to its gorgeously remastered sound, this 16-track, 64-minute collection treats the material with the respect it deserves. The material, of course, is first-rate, wall-to-wall standards from Johnny Mercer's wistful "Laura" to Ellington's sly "Do Nothin' Til You Hear From Me." Fitzgerald's performances are equally outstanding, as are the mostly big-band arrangements. This is as good as jazz ballad collections get.
Includes liner notes by James Gavin.
Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, Bob Bain (guitar); Corky Hale, Kathyrine Julye, Ann Mason Stockton, Veryle Brilhart (harp); Gerald Vinci, Mischa Russell, James Getzoff, Henry Hill , Felix Slatkin, Victor Bay, Erno Neufeld, Benny Gill, Jacques Gasselin, Lou Raderman, Murray Kellner, Alex Beller, Joe Stepansky, Dan Lube, Marshall Sosson, Sidney Sharp, Stuff Smith, Victor Arno, Israel Baker, Nathan Ross, Paul Shure, Walter ...

| | George Sone Perform The Music Of Stewart Dirk Fischer CD (2004)
Angel Eyes CD music
$14.99 While it has been the rage for some time for every twenty-something musician who gets a record date to concentrate on original material, many of them would be wise to look for neglected compositions by veteran musicians like Stewart "Dirk" Fischer. Fischer, whose career has been devoted to jazz education rather than recording, is the brother of the well-known ...

| | Final Solutions Songs By Solutions CD (2007)
Angel Eyes album
$15.19 It may seem silly to talk about songwriting chops when discussing Memphis' Final Solutions, a group of art-damaged punks who all look like they met in line at a post-apocalyptic unemployment agency. However, on Songs By Solutions, the group exhibits quality punk craftsmanship. Like the album title says, the Solutions are completely to blame for all of the paranoid, hallucinatory treasures contained within. There is no need for the Final Solutions to rest on the crutch of a classic punk cover; not when they are busy unleashing such rabid rockers as the amazing "Rubber Stamp Test", "Brown Panther" and the completely unglued "Liquid Brainstem Cocktail." The ingeniously amateurish DIY ditty, "I'm a Lightning Bug" is a not-so-distant cousin to some of the best jams from the Desperate Bicycles and the Urinals. "Little Man in My Mind" brings to...um, mind the unzipped ouevre of Chris Knox (Toy Love, Tall Dwarves) and the underrated skiffle revivalists, the Strapping Fieldhands. The spectre of the ultimate art punk ...
