STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not completely "inside," it is far more so than most have a right to expect. For newcomers to Zorn's music, this may not sound typical of his dozens of other records, but it is a great place to start.

Soul of the Drums is the better of the two sessions, featuring smooth exotica rhythms that aren't as colorful as previous Baxter releases. Academy Award Winners contains lackluster versions of hits from popular films of the early '60s, including "Days of Wine and Roses," "Baby Elephant Walk," and "Boy's Night Out." Few jazz performers have been as successful in applying their improvisational chops to the work of revered classical composers as this Philadelphia born pianist Uri Caine, whose catalog over the years has included homages to everyone from Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk to the songs of Tin Pan Alley and more recently, Mahler, Wagner, Bach, Beethoven and Schumann. His current ensemble, which features violinist Joyce Hammann, clarinetist Chris Speed, trumpeter Ralph Alessi, electric guitarist Nguyên Lê, and DJ Olive on turntables, takes Mozart out of his own century and puts him into an experimental jazz crazy house circa 2007 -- a time travel experience that is partially eloquent and recognizably beautiful (Piano Sonata in C Major) and at times disorienting, hauntingly strange and overly chaotic (Symphony 40 in G Minor).
