$13.45 An all but perfect one-disc best-of. The Fish, of course, were simultaneously the most political and the funniest of the so-called San Francisco bands (actually, they were from Berkeley). As a result, despite their tendency to jam at length at the drop of a joint (a trait endemic to the SF bands) they tended to be more song-oriented than most of their contemporaries.
This anthology is also a terrific showcase of the band's ...
| | Nothingface Skeletons CD (2003) Import

$28.29 Originally lumped in with the faceless rap-rock hordes that stormed the charts in the wake of Korn and Limp Bizkit's late-'90s commercial success, Nothingface distinguished itself early on with a thoughtful, fist-tight, precision-ground style of nu-metal, unafraid to temper death-metal inspired shrieking with bits of actual melody and catchy hooks. On SKELETONS the group further explores both sides of its split personality. Though the band still convincingly rips out some great Pantera/Mudvayne-esque larynx-shredding fare, it really shines on the vocal harmony-laden alternative rock-sounding tracks, which often have more in common with Incubus or Deep Elm Records-style emo bands than with the combo's more doom & gloom-oriented contemporaries.
The Washington, DC-based quartet has made a name for themselves by combining some of the most extreme sounds known to man with some of the most harmonious. Their muscular, jagged riffs, pounding rhythms and vocal mayhem give way to blissful sounds that defy a currently vapid state of heavy music. Call it versatility or schizophrenia, Nothingface's ability to make the ...

| | Firewind Premonition CD (2008)
10 songs
$13.25 The power metal revival movement of the '90s and 21st century has been very far reaching in Europe. In addition to all the power metal revival bands that emerged in the Scandinavian countries in the '90s and 2000s, there has been noteworthy power metal revival activity in countries ranging from Germany and Holland to Italy and Poland. And Greece is the home of Firewind, although the band traveled to Sweden to record The Premonition with metal producer Fredrik Nordström (not to be confused with the jazz saxophonist). When metalheads look at Nordström's résumé, they see quite a few extreme metal bands -- including In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Opeth and At the Gates on the death metal side and Dimmu Borgir on the black metal side. But Nordström has by no means been an extreme metal producer exclusively; one also sees Dream Evil, Dragonland, Hammerfall and other power metal and/or prog metal bands on his résumé. The Premonition isn't the first time Nordström has worked with Firewind, and his presence is a definite plus on this late 2007 recording. Nordström is obviously someone with a strong appreciation of melody -- even in the death metal/black metal field, Nordström has tended to favor the more melodic bands -- and melody is a crucial part of aggressive yet decidedly musical selections like "Angels Forgive Me," "My Loneliness," and "Mercenary Man." The Premonition doesn't break any new ground for Firewind, who are every bit as mindful of Ronnie James Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Queensrÿche on The Premonition as they were on previous releases. And even when they cover Michael Sembello's 1983 hit "Maniac" (from the movie Flashdance), Firewind still sounds like an '80s power metal band. "Maniac," ...
