STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not ...

Terra feels like an attempt to move Mariza into the musical mainstream. She's already established herself at the forefront of fado, as one of the leading performers of the emotive Portuguese style, and there's no doubt she possesses a wonderful voice. But the addition of several guests, such as Chucho Valdés, Ivan Lins, and Tito Paris (among others) seems to open up the seams between fado and other genres, including Brazilian music and jazz. It does so relatively subtly, and she keeps her base pretty firmly in fado (witness the glorious "Ja Me Deixou"). But the inclusion of a standard like "Smile," which closes the album and has her singing in English, is evidence of the move to broaden her appeal, as is the lushness of the arrangements, ...

An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it's still a Bob Marley album and thus as good as the best work of many other artists. Overall, CONFRONTATION is great mellow summertime listening and a worthy addition to any reggae collection.

Vile Richard is comprised of singer/songwriters Olaf Alders and Andrew Vanhorn, joined by a quirky collective of musical friends and neighbours. Alders and Vanhorn have been seen and heard across Eastern Canada, performing live on TV and radio from Hamilton to Halifax. Notable venues include Toronto's CityTV and Edge 102 radio, ATV/CTV in Atlantic Canada and Ottawa's "The New RO". Overseas radio play includes BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris Country. The band has also written and performed music for indie film and stage productions as well as performing improvised pieces for live theatre at Second City. Having met as Humanities students at McMaster University, Alders and Vanhorn soon started performing regularly at venues around the Hamilton area. Vanhorn put together a band called "Rice", which featured Alders on guitar and bass. Alders formed a band called "Vile Richard", which often featured Vanhorn on guitar and bass.
