Clearly a producer with an unapologetic love for the conceptual, Scott Morgan's second album for Kranky as Loscil takes on an aquatic theme -- each track is named after a submarine. After David Lee Roth's shocking split from Van Halen at the height of the group's popularity, all parties involved resorted to a media-fueled circus of mudslinging. Roth's first post-V.H. project was to be a motion picture (CRAZY FROM THE HEAT) which never got off the ground. But Roth had already assembled a killer solo band, including ex-Frank Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, ex-Talas bassist Billy Sheehan, and ex-Maynard Ferguson drummer Gregg Bissonette, to record songs for the movie's soundtrack. Instead of scrapping the tracks, he incorporated them into his first solo album, 1986's EAT 'EM AND SMILE.

The double-disc One More Shot includes a remastered version of Danko/Fjeld/Andersen's self-titled album from 1991 along with a newly available live performance from the same year. Upon its original release, Danko/Fjeld/Andersen quietly won much acclaim, most notably the 1992 Spellemans Pris, which is Norway's version of a Grammy. All three artists trade singing and songwriting duties over the course of the album's 12 tracks, and the mood is often gentle, one of melancholy and reflection. Of the standout moments, Rick Danko's rendition of Eric Andersen's "Blue River" deserves recognition. The second disc of One More Shot features the trio's performance at the 1991 Molde International Jazz Festival, which took place shortly after Danko/Fjeld/Andersen recorded their album. During the course of the 16-song performance, each of the three artists gets some time in the solo spotlight, and the trio revisits songs from their respective pasts as well as a few songs from Danko/Fjeld/Andersen. A small backing band joins the trio for the performance, which sounds intimate and stripped down. Though Danko/Fjeld/Andersen has been readily available, this live performance has not, which makes One More Shot the preferred choice over the studio album on its own. Three friends, three musical soul mates, three distinctive talents, an award-winning studio disc and a recently unearthed live recording - "One More Shot" is an embarrassment of riches!When Eric Andersen, one of folk's preeminent singer-songwriters, Rick Danko, the Band bassist with the heartbreaking voice, and Jonas Fjeld, the renowned Norwegian performer and songwriter, played an impromptu gig in Woodstock, N.Y., in the fall of 1990, there was "magic in the air," according to Andersen. Recognizing this unique synergy, the trio quickly played a 10-date Norwegian tour in February 1991, then headed into an Oslo studio to catch their collaboration on tape. The resultant, self-titled CD went on to win the prestigious Spellemans Pris (Norway's version of the Grammy) in 1992. The following year, "Danko/Fjeld/Andersen" (issued by Ryko in the U.S.) was awarded the NAIRD (now AFIM) "Indie Award" as 1993's Best Adult Contemporary album.Along with the prizes came high praise for the CD.
