Another wonderful score for the Harry Potter series
As we all know, John Williams was the the composer for the first three films. He brought a really playful and fun style to the Harry Potter films.
Patrick Doyle would soon be brought in by Williams since Williams would be unavailable for the Goblet Of Fire and Patrick Doyle in my view created another fun score but the Goblet of Fire was meant to be a dark movie but the score seemed a little too playful.
When David Yates was selected to direct the Order Of The Phoenix, he brought in his long time composer Nicholas Hooper. Hooper was really unknown when selected and had never done a big budget score.
The soundtrack in my view (like the film) is probably the most entertaining score in the series to listen to. Hooper brings a much more straight forward style then Williams and Doyle and that is really one of the scores strong points.
The score for the most part is very dark and really has a much different tone the first 4 Harry Potter scores. But Hooper does throw in some lighthearted tunes in with Umbriges tune, Dumbledore's army and the Room of Requirement tune and the playful opening track Fireworks.
But the album is full of dark tunes in Possession, Darkness Takes Over, Death of Sirius and others. I was really satisfied with his additions to Hedwigs Theme, he gave it a much more dark and emotional tune that really fit well and set the tone for the rest of the film.
One of the additions I really liked in this score was the addition of the choir in most of the tunes, it gave the score something much different then Williams and Doyle's scores and really made stand on its own.
While there are a bunch of positives to this score, there are a few negatives that poke their heads out. One is the length of this CD, there at least an hour and a half of score in the film and yet this CD is cut down to 52 minutes. Another negative is the track order of the CD, it doesn't go in the order of the film at all. The last negative is a small one that is the volume of some of the tracks. Tracks like the Hall of Prophecy start off really low but the it is so low you can't hear it.
But overall is a very entertaining score and it looks like Hooper will be scoring the rest of the series since Yates is signed to direct them all, so i'm really interested to hear more of Hoopers work.
