| | Ricky Martin MTV Unplugged CD Ricky Martin Discography of CDs
Since his mainstream American breakthrough, Ricky Martin has been associated largely with slick dance-pop. One of the pleasant surprises of this MTV UNPLUGGED set is that it finds Martin returning to an earlier, more organic sound. The UNPLUGGED aesthetic suggests a quiet, stripped-down approach, but that's not necessarily the case here. Martin has a huge band behind him, including horns and strings, but the inventive arrangements and straightforward approach--not to mention the Spanish-only lyrics--present the artist in a refreshingly natural context. The sharp, dynamic performances, on the part of both Martin and his band, don't hurt matters, either.

MTV Unplugged album
$12.79 If one thought that the big band flavor of salsa music was dead, GUASABARA is one album that refutes that theory. With a full band assembled in Puerto Rico, tracks like "Mambo Valentin" cross generational lines, bringing an old-school feel to contemporary salsa not heard in many years. Alto saxophones and intricate piano arrangements inject a classy jazz element into performances like "Amnesia" and "Me Voy De Aquí," making GUASABARA as good for listening as it is to dance to.
Bebop may have signaled the end of the swing era, but keyboardist/arranger/producer Jose Lugo is bringing it back with a vengeance. The big band Latino style created by Machito and his Afro-Cubans is something that has disappeared from the scene since the heyday of the salsa era. Now ...

| | Joao Gilberto Amoroso/Brasil CD (1993)
MTV Unplugged music CDs
$11.99 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, are among Gilberto's best solo albums. Alternating between standards like "'S Wonderful" or "Besame Mucho" and Brazilian tunes like Jobim's "Wave" and the original "Triste," AMOROSO is a fine, romantic jazz album. BRASIL, as the title suggests, consists of six traditional-style sambas, sung in Portuguese to acoustic guitars and hypnotic percussion. Both are essential to Gilberto fans and neophytes.
AMOROSO was released in 1977.
BRASIL was released in 1981.
BRASIL personnel: Joao Gilberto (vocals, guitar); Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Maria ...

| | Luis Miguel Vivo CDs (2000)
MTV Unplugged music CDs
$8.75 VIVO was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album, for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Album.
VIVO won the 2001 Billboard Latin Music Award for Male Pop Album of the Year.
There's so much myth surrounding Latin pop star Luis Miguel--a man who rubbed shoulders with Sinatra, and can't turn around without winning an award--that it's hard to imagine him standing on a stage interacting with a real, live audience. Nevertheless, it's something he does all the time, to packed houses the world over, and VIVO stands as an effective document of the live Luis Miguel experience.
Despite the intimidation factor inherent in someone of Miguel's status, he seems refreshingly real, shouting playfully to the crowd, and investing all his energy into his performance. The music moves mostly from lightly grooving Latin pop/R&B to lushly romantic numbers, and Miguel's singing is inevitably consistent, as he wraps the crowd around his little finger.
Recorded at Watersound, Studio City, California and The Record Plant, Hollywood, California.
Personnel: Luis Miguel (vocals).
