Ben Mono, a Munich-based DJ, producer, remixer and multi-instrumentalist, has dubbed his music "bit-hop" -- a variation on the minimal techno sounds that continue to hold sway in his native region. To that familiar groove he adds elements of funk, electronica, hip-hop and even the occasional dash of '80s pop, and the result is quite a lot of fun. On his sophomore effort, he makes a few missteps: the "Intro" track is, like all such tracks, a complete waste of time (who needs to hear a minute-and-a-half of hype about an album we've already purchased, thanks), and whenever vocalist Jemeni pops in with her silly poetry it takes a mighty effort to build the momentum back up again. But Mono does it every time, and the high points greatly outnumber the low ones: the slow, squidgy, vocoder-laden electro-funk of "Binary Poetry" is one of the album's highlights, as are the rhythmically complex (though lyrically banal) "Listen" (featuring Capitol A), the glitchy and jittery "Midnight Sun" (featuring Jason Todd) and the very fun title track (featuring Yo Majesty). Very nice. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Eddie Ruleclean, Shane Fontane, Kerry L. Dooley (vocals).

Hit The Bit album
$6.09 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend popular trends, to separate himself from the ranks of wannabes and me-toos, he may be on the verge of inaugurating some stylistic changes of his own.
Production-wise, Nas has gathered together some of the superstars of the hip hop underground, producers the likes of Q-Tip, Pete Rock, L.E.S., ...

$9.35 The motorcyclists' answer to The Fast and the Furious, Biker Boyz features an appropriately testosterone- and adrenaline-driven soundtrack that focuses on hip-hop and nu-metal. Not surprisingly, most of the rap and hip-hop selections are hipper than the rock songs -- while the ...

$11.29 Everything comes around again, it seems. The old acoustic guitar albums of the 1960s, on labels like Takoma, had a small audience. A couple of decades later, Windham Hill slicked up the product and helped create the whole new age genre. It all came back with the first Imaginational Anthem compilation, and this second ...
