Innovative Brooklyn trio Parts & Labor raise the bar yet again on their fourth effort, 2007's MAPMAKER. As on the group's other releases, MAPMAKER offers up plenty of art-damaged noise, especially given the predominance of clattering, thunderous percussion and unpredictable sonic swerves. Yet the songs on the album also deliver more melodies and hooks than any previous Parts & Labor disc.
Opener "Fractured Skies" is a case in point in the way its heavy attack lays the groundwork for hooks and pop craft. Even at its most avant garde (as on the closer "Knives and Pencils"), Parts & Labor execute their experiments with taste and an ear toward accessibility, which makes MAPMAKER a must for those who enjoy smart, challenging experimental rock.
Parts & Labor: BJ Warshaw (bass guitar); Christopher R. Weingarten (drums); Dan Friel (electronics).
Additional personnel: Sarah Kornbluth (vocals); Joe Kremer (guitar); Natalja Kent (flute); Brett Deschenes (trumpet); Sam Kulik (trombone); Jeffrey Ottenbacher (percussion).
Magnet (p.102) - "[T]he squealing guitars and rewired electronics combine with Christopher Weingarten's exceptional drumming to make a record that's heavy, noisy and artful in a delightfully unpretentious way." The Wire (p.49) - "By embedding the full throttle melodies of Husker Du and Minutemen within Wolf Eyes-style noise and fractured electronic shards, they have created something unique." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.58) - "Tracks like 'The Gold We're Still Digging' and 'Vision Of Repair' display a commendable quest to search out new sounds, unpredictable structures and grooves." $18.99 BIORosa Russ sings with a sweet conviction, one that saturates every note she graces.Approaching the music with skill, respect, and sincerity,Rosa is genteel, passionate, and convincing. Hers is an unpredictable, melodic voyage, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. As we surrender through her sojourn of love, truth and light,Let go... she will carry you, Sit back...and enjoy the depth!Herstory. . . Rosa Lynn Russ . . . Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, Rosa was clear about her destiny from the age of six. Following in the path of her mother, she graced the church with her gift of song and discovered a love for music. At fourteen she was invited to solo with her older brother's R&B band, after which she received standing ovations. Rosa remembered, "I was excited to see that I could move an adult audience at such a young age."Bustin' out various high school musical opportunities--Borough wide, All-City and Gospel choirs, "Talent Unlimited" as well as a European tour-- left Rosa ready to hit the NYC Session Circuit and begin singing background for various artists. Keeping it in the family, Rosa later teamed up with her sister and brothers forming a group called "Images." Together they recorded and shared their familial talents. Rosa's teenage influences included Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole and Michael Jackson, just to name a few, but it really all started with . . . Mom . . .Rosa grew up surrounded and soothed by the voices of Ella, Sarah, Nancy... and Mom. Shirley Russ, an extraordinary church soloist for most of Rosa's childhood, continues to fascinate audiences from church congregants to opera buffs. Rosa recalled her mother singing spirituals and jazz standards. "She was always singing," said Rosa, "... at church, in concerts, ...

$13.15 QUBENZIS - XEN BREAKS. 11 tracks 78minAbout & Credits---------------Engineering, Song writing, Performing: Ricky MaardRecorded in: Spain, AndaluciaPublished by: Qubetech.netSpecial Thanks:To Paul Vedant (Australia/Spain) inspiration and for helping out with the Internet project inspiration and feedback, DJ Fly Fluss (Toys/Marbella/Spain) for inspiration, feedback and for believing in QUBENZIS from the very start, DJ Unhinged (Psy DJ Barbados/Japan) for inspiration, invaluable advice reg. frequency sound shaping and mixing.XEN BREAKS----------Stands apart by expressing a solid individual cross genre soundAlmost everything you hear is original sounds created from scratch with an analogue synth called Clavia Nord Modular, like the percussion, effect sounds, sequencers, bass and melodies. The few remaining sounds origin from Roland JV1080 or mac-speech (voices). Mostly processed with Cubase's VST effects/recording studio. (see instrument list). On this album most songs are based on funky break beats or syncopated back beats. Though three of the songs are based on a straight kick with the the back- and brake-beats lingering inside the sound (also see 'Cosmic Embryo Electronica' album).Short Bio---------As a 6 year old Ricky went with his grandmother to a concert hall in Stockholm to see the still very popular artist Miriam Makeba. Circumstances made that Miriam saw the little boy and called him to the stage for shaking hands.Embarrassed, honored and impressed by the performance and especially the percussion sounds, Ricky's concert experience made him decide that he wanted to play drums, which he promptly told his granny.Since his granny was singing and playing (folk music and political) Ricky often played on her guitar, hence his first instrument. At 10, he started drumming lessons where he picked up the basics from an elderly old-school jazz drummer who, unfortunately, had a slight drinking problem. The latter became the reason for Rich to quit after a two years. Bought a bass-guitar few years later and started slapping it together with a drummer and a keyboardist. The first band was borne (still in school age).Brought up in a prosperous late 70's Sweden, he had access to music technology from the very start. In those day's even the garage bands where well equipped with everything an aspiring musician/composer could dream of.It has always been a part of Ricky's life to experiment with audio and music technology since ...
