Building on the strength of a well-received series of EPs, the Austin, Texas, indie-rock act Voxtrot unveiled its self-titled debut in 2007. Fronted by plaintive-voiced singer Ramesh Srivastava, the ensemble often comes across as a fleet-footed, less-dour version of the National, with impressive Britpop-influenced arrangements gilded by strong rhythms and catchy melodies (see the urgent "Kid Gloves" and the energetic "Firecracker"). While comparisons to other post-punk-inspired bands (including Interpol and Bloc Party) are inevitable, the quintet manages to assert its own emotive aesthetic, particularly on "Brothers in Conflict," where Srivastava knowingly sings, "I have to lose my idols to find my voice."

Rolling Stone (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]uneful stuff with a fluid, detailed guitar sound and daubs of Eighties Brit pop and Leonard Cohen." Q (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] surging choruses and exultant guitars on 'Ghost' and 'Blood Red Blood'....'Firecracker' is all the better for some unadulterated punk riffing." Uncut (p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n emotionally experienced, lyrically visceral record....The themes of violent anger and mental struggle give his seeming feyness wolf-like teeth." Alternative Press (p.170) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The band maintain their dedication to literate lyrics and dainty pop songs that are well-suited for dancing and daydreaming..." Magnet (p.111) - "Breathless romps 'Ghost' and 'Brother in Conflict' are the power-pop pace setters, both punctuated by a euphoric, serotonin-fueled extra gear that waits to kick in until the finish line is within sight." Voxtrot
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving the tower/make your peace"). However, at the end of "Price of Gas," when he proclaims "I can tell you how this ends/We're going to win ...
| | National Alligator CD (2005)
Voxtrot
$12.19 Two pairs of brothers--Aaron and Bryce Dessner (guitars) and Scott and Bryan Devendorf (bass and drums, respectively)--keep things alternately chiming, churning, and appropriately atmospheric. The startling relationship sketch "Karen," for example, rides a light rock pulse dominated by piano and augmented by strings, making it one of the album's shining moments. "All the Wine" turns Berninger's usually dark self-exploration on its head with its semi-ironic self-aggrandizement. ALLIGATOR's 13 tracks testify to the National's standing as one of the more distinctive and absorbing bands around.
Special limited edition issue of the Brooklyn based Ohioan's third critically acclaimed opus, like Entertainment Weekly's rave, "The twilite melodies and Matt Berninger's gossamer vocals will haunt your troubled dreams". This special edition includes 2 previous rarities {"Thrilling Of Claire" and "Driver, Surprise ...
| | Appleseed Cast Peregrine CD (2006) Digipak
Voxtrot
$10.09 The Appleseed Cast has a sound that you might have a hard time categorizing until you hear someone use the phrase "Midwest post-rock." Then it becomes obvious that that's exactly what they sound like, even if the term itself is really kind of baffling. You have to hear it to understand: the Appleseed Cast's sound is often noisy, but is never just noise; they experiment with weird and unusual production approaches, but you wouldn't call them avant-garde. Nestled within the sometimes dense clouds of guitar noise are genuinely attractive hooks, and their songs often contain puzzling but highly effective contradictions. Note, for example, "Here We Are (Family ...
| | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass CD (2006)
Voxtrot
$9.95 With 2006's cheekily titled I AM NOT AFRAID OF YOU AND I WILL BEAT YOUR ASS, the beloved indie-rock trio Yo La Tengo presents a dynamic set of songs that echo the band's past, while notably downplaying the soporific atmospherics of preceding discs (the lauded AND THEN NOTHING and SUMMER SUN). The New Jersey-based group ...
| | National Boxer CD (2007)
Voxtrot
$9.95 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often ...

Voxtrot
$8.55 The strongest collection released during a flurry of early-'90s activity, 13 Flavours of Doom re-ignited the aging Canadian punk outfit D.O.A. Fast-paced openers "Already Dead" and "Death Machine" establish a nice momentum that other D.O.A. offerings of the time sorely lacked. There are considerably fewer mid-tempo clunkers, the ...
| | Lucinda Williams Car Wheels On A Gravel Road CD (1998)
Voxtrot
$11.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much passion that it seems inevitable she'll find her emotional center again.
Produced largely by Steve Earle, CAR WHEELS is immersed in that late-'90s alt-country sound, full of slide guitar, accordion, dobro and other Americana touches. It's a tribute to Williams's unique artistic vision that she distinguishes herself from the No Depression crowd by virtue of her idiosyncratic songwriting. Full of lust, sadness and the occasional glimmer of hope, CAR WHEELS is one small step for Lucinda Williams and one giant leap for those tuned into her wavelength.
