When an album is described as a "musical mirror" of Haitian voodoo ceremonies, what you might expect is something like a field recording, featuring strange liturgical singing and chanting with minimal and probably fairly rudimentary accompaniment. What voodoo priest Erol Josue offers on this album, however, is something quite different: sophisticated and multi-layered arrangements of songs that draw on voodoo ceremonies for their lyrical themes and melodies, but that are recorded professionally and feature a wide variety of musical influences and elements, from the electric kalimba sounds of Congo to American R&B, Haitian folk and pop music, soca, and West African high life. It's a rich and heady musical mixture, one that works best to the degree that its ingredients are wrestled into something resembling song format. When Josue contents himself with trance-inducing repetition (as on "Madam Legan" and "Yege Dahomen"), the surface attractions of the music wear thin fairly quickly. But when he takes a more disciplined approach, as on the gorgeous "La Souvenance," the slow and funky "Ochan Lavi" and the subtle but cathartic "Atompa," the results are ravishing. Whatever one may think about Josue's missionary approach to voodoo tradition, there's no denying the excitement and beauty of his music. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Valerie Louis, Rozena Zila, Majorie Beaubrun (vocals); John Lucas, PJ Bianco, Bill Man, Guilherme, Chad F. Elliott, Juancho Herrera (guitars); Jojo Kuo (drums); Markus Schwarts, Joel Augustin (percussion).

Regelman album
$11.09 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional ...

Regelman album
$8.45 This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran ...

Regelman music CDs
$11.65 Was sorry to hear of the death of singer RAYBEEZ in September (of some kind of illness, not sure which). This New York fixture was regarded as the nicest skinhead in New York (a living contrast to the unfair stereotype of the violent or neo-Nazi skin) as a longtime security man at local theaters like The Ritz and frontman for this group. He always practiced what he preached in Warzone, whose music from beginning to this (presumed) end was always in the '81-'84 original Dischord hardcore thrash sound (Minor Threat, S.O.A., Scream, Youth Brigade, GIs, etc.), all bands Ray supported in those older days. The sound on this last work is particularly crisp since it's produced by BAD BRAINS' guitarist DR. KNOW (just before the original lineup of Bad Brains reformed recently and began recording themselves), and the title track here is truly convincing punk as well. "Drug Free" exalts Raybeez in "Countdown," making ...
