The first Austin Powers soundtrack was a regular Carnaby Street lovefest of kitsch and kisses, complete with goofy and thoroughly groovy obscurities from Edwyn Collins and the Wondermints, plus the happy inclusion of Brasil '66, Quincy Jones, and several classics pulled from the shaggadelic Burt Bacharach oeuvre. But Hollywood loves a success story and the soundtrack to the highly touted sequel is chock-full of starpower. Though it's not the same stoned soul picnic as the original, there are gems. Madonna lets loose with the terrific psychedelic pop frug "Beautiful Stranger"--her most cheerful and cheesy song since 1989's "Cherish." Green Day slams gleefully into "Peter Gunn"-style twangy guitar grooves with the instrumental "Espionage."
Burt Bacharach returns with Elvis Costello in tow for a remake of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and R.E.M.'s cover of Tommy James' "Draggin' The Line" retains the sexy drawl of the original. Remixes, some of them unreleased, are the order of the day for the second volume in Naked Music's Bare Essentials series. It's not a bad idea, either; fans get the sound they're after, while neophytes get a taste of what the label's about with a hit or two to boot. Two of the biggest-name remixers contribute the most, Jimpster with a remix of Blue Six's "All I Need" that balances a percussive drive with laid-back bass keys, Crazy P (aka Crazy Penis) with a pitched-up reworking of Aquanote's superb single "Nowhere" into a housey breakbeat production. Elsewhere, Naked Music executives Miguel Migs and Andy Caldwell meet in a soundclash, with Caldwell delivering an expressive, mid-tempo breakbeat mix of Migs' "The Night." New signings Central Living and Weekender get the only three originals here, and though they don't sound like they're in for the long haul, they do prove good fits with the label aesthetic. Starring the ngoni, a five-string instrument of traditional West Africa with tonal qualities somewhere between a percussive banjo and a plucked lute, SEGA BLUE finds Kouyate--himself a master ngoni player--and three cohorts interlocking expressive pentatonic riffs across 14 elliptical tracks. Most of the songs lyrically focus on the Bambara empire in pre-colonial 18th century Mali, but a few standouts such as the elegiac "Lament for Ali Farka" depart from the concept.
