Mean Between album
$11.49 Named for a town near Bristol, England, Portishead is a British dance band that grabs ideas from all over the mod pop world (spaghetti Western guitars, turntable scratching, melancholy soul vocals, atmospheric organs, house beats) and stirs them into spacey, dub-like productions that sound like a dance club in the middle of a "Twin Peaks" dream. You could call it surreal hip-hop pop. But if the beats on the band's debut album achieve a kind of trance-like static, the songs themselves reach for something more rousing. With understated lyrics and overstated melodies, singer Beth Gibbons and bandleader Geoff Barrow write insinuatingly melancholy dance ballads that ebb and flow like waves through rustling waters. Organs quaver in quiet tremolos, guitars emit squiggles and turntables hiccup, while Gibbons, in a high, cutting voice that evokes a less breathy Sinead O'Connor, sings songs of longing and heartbreak with equally ...
| | Madonna Something To Remember CD (1995)
Mean Between CD music
$13.95 SOMETHING TO REMEMBER is a collection of Madonna's ballads. It includes two new songs, "You'll See" and "One More Chance," and two versions of "I Want You," originally recorded for the Marvin Gaye tribute album INNER CITY BLUES, which was released three weeks earlier.
She can dance and she can jive, and most of the time that's why you buy Madonna records. She's our real-life dancing queen. So if buying an album advertised as her "Greatest Ballad Hits" strikes you as sort of like buying acoustic Abba, you're probably not alone.
But ever since TRUE BLUE, Madonna has displayed a keen interest in pop orchestration and smoky, soulful singing. On the breakthrough "Live To Tell," she discovered the low end of her vocal range, while co-producer and co-writer Patrick Leonard built a psychedelic swell of keyboards, guitars and sound effects around her. It was like nothing she had done before, dealing directly with dark secrets, foreshadowing an adult pop sound that she'd stick by through all the twists, turns and trends that followed. SOMETHING TO REMEMBER collects such slow and mid-tempo tracks from the various nooks in which Madonna's hidden them (though most were singles, many had showed up in album form only on soundtracks), and shows off the dark chanteuse qualities that she has only ...

| | Pink I'm Not Dead CD (2006)
Mean Between songs
$9.59 Remarkably, these genre experiments work well together, and stand as a testament to Pink's unwillingness to fit into any music industry mold. Whether collaborating with the Indigo Girls on the acoustic protest song "Dear Mr. President," showing off her irresistible swagger on the electro-groove-driven "'Cuz I Can," or generating soaring pop-rock on "Runaway," I'M NOT DEAD gives listeners plenty to chew on, and the results are as tasty as they are surprising.
Pink deserves a lot of credit for overturning ...
| | Gary Numan Jagged CD (2006)
Mean Between album
$12.95 On 2006's JAGGED, influential synth-pop artist Gary Numan is firmly entrenched in the dark side. This ominous studio outing finds the British singer/multi-instrumentalist focused on atmosphere more than catchy hooks (a la his lone hit "Cars"), seemingly picking up where David Bowie left off on 1995's OUTSIDE (minus that disc's busy narrative conceit). Numan is clearly committed to weighty industrial arrangements ...
| | Phoenix It's Never Been Like That CD (2006)
Mean Between CD music
$9.35 With its third album, French pop group Phoenix heads away from the dance floor and toward a crisp, guitar-based sound more in line with the Strokes. While the lighthearted 1980s-flavored beats that make Phoenix's music so enjoyable are still in place, they are carefully countered with a jangly slacker aesthetic. IT'S NEVER BEEN LIKE THAT may not pop with anything as catchy as their early single "Too Young," but it does offer a consistency lacking on 2004's ALPHABETICAL and 2000's UNITED. Only the opening track, "Napoleon Says," seems out of place, its initial notes recalling the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' hit "Maps." Later tracks like "Rally" and "Long Distance Call" prove that the band is capable of mixing this newly relaxed style with Thomas Mars's infectious, Nilsson-esque vocals in a way that is simultaneously accessible and progressive, creating a tension with the band's typically clean production that gives the album an interesting energy.
