Elektrik Psylocibe Experience
$10.35 Broadcast's music has always been a little unearthly, so BROADCAST & THE FOCUS GROUP INVESTIGATE WITCH CULTS OF THE RADIO AGE isn't so much a departure as it is an inspired homage to their influences. VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS and its alternately innocent and menacing soundtrack inspired the band years before the movie was rediscovered. The whimsy and strangely familiar feel of '60s and '70s library music could also be heard in their music from the beginning, but never more clearly than on this mini-album. Broadcast's more esoteric side is heightened by the Focus Group, whose Ghost Box label is ground zero for the evocatively named "hauntology" micro-genre, which digs deep into vintage electronics and notions of what people thought the future would be like -- two things Broadcast have always done, even if they're not explicitly part of the hauntology crowd.
INVESTIGATE WITCH CULTS OF THE RADIO AGE's highly detailed, evocative miniatures replace TENDER BUTTONS' stark clarity with softly busy collages full of literal and figurative layers. Analog synths, distant beats, guitar ...

Elektrik Psylocibe Experience
$19.89 When the producers and Mario decided together the repertoire to be performed, Mario doubted he might be able to reproduce stylistically songs of the classic American repertoire such as "Slow Hot Wind" and "On A Clear Day", or even "A Handful Of Soul". The result instead can be stunning to most. In this album, not only he delivers a very convincing interpretation but his voice adds a different colour to the music. In the past few years Mario collaborated with Alessandro Magnanini (Was-A-Bee), multi-faced musician as well as excellent arranger. With Alessandro, Mario co-wrote two authentic gems "No Mercy For Me" and "This Is What You Are". The latter was released as a single and licensed on various compilations, gaining enough success. Whilst "No Mercy For Me" reveals Mario's true soul of a crooner, "This Is What You Are" went on air in U.K. on heavy rotation in Norman Jay's program Giant 45 for BBC London. Whereas in Italy it was programmed by RMC and later became the music to the network's corporate TV commercial. Another unreleased track is "Never Die", wrote by Marco Bianchi and Paolo Fedreghini (of duo Fedreghini-Bianchi, as well as The Invisible Session), ...
| | Freddy Fender Interpreta El Rock! CD (2003)
Elektrik Psylocibe Experience
$9.59 In the early '60s, before a stretch in prison put his career on pause and he found success as a country artist after regaining his freedom, Freddy Fender was a Spanish-singing rock & roll sensation throughout Texas and Mexico, and the Interpreta el Rock album captures the sound of Fender (still trading sometimes as Baldemar Huerta) ripping it up on a dozen originals and covers. Since Arhoolie's 2003 reissue of the album doesn't include any songwriting credits, sometimes it's a bit hard to tell which is which -- "Vamos a Bailar" sure sounds like Ray Charles's "What'd I Say," and "Bailando el Rock ...

| | Tribeca Dragon Down CD (2005) Digipak
Elektrik Psylocibe Experience
$11.19 The second full-length from Swedish singer Lasse Lindh's electro-pop outfit Tribeca, Dragon Down is uncommonly ruminative for an album of synth-based pop, combining a finely tuned ear for hooks and inventive, often playful synthesizer arrangements with a mature, songwriterly sensibility in lyrical dissections of love and pain that place a definite emphasis on the latter. Right out of the gate, "La, la, la etc." belies its sturdy electro-disco groove and guardedly hopeful lyrics about the prospect of domestic happiness (opening line: "So I love you/I guess that's a good thing") with an air of restraint and weariness that's echoed in the laconic title/chorus. Even the most musically vibrant songs -- the driving "Hide Away," with its deliciously cheesy faux-Chinese riffs, and the massively buoyant dream pop single "Solitude" -- are more than a little tinged with sadness, while the understated, slow-grooving lament "The Big Hurt" slides into hammering hard techno in its final minute, as if to viscerally transfer ...
