2007 comprehensive collection covering Bessie's whole career. Bessie overcame tremendous odds to become the Empress of the Blues, the best blues singer of her era, and the source of numerous legends. Above all, Bessie had a powerful and beautiful voice, and a strong personality which she imposed on every tune she chose to sing. Some of the tunes from her repertoire were composed by or for her, while she selected others from the vaudeville shows she often performed in. Most of the songs were Blues about lost lovers and personal problems, which in her voice sounded sincere and moving. This 24 track CD covers her whole career, beginning in her first session and ending in her last. The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.

Epic's THE ESSENTIAL STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN AND DOUBLE TROUBLE gathers two discs' worth of the late blues guitarist's work, including many live performances and a few tracks with the Vaughan Brothers. The collection presents Vaughan's material in roughly chronological order, from the 1980 live recording "Shake for Me" to 1989's "Life by the Drop." It also touches on most of Vaughan's definitive songs and performances, including "Tightrope," "Wall of Denial," "Couldn't Stand the Weather," and "Cold Shot," and live versions of "The Sky Is Crying," "Superstition," and "Rude Mood/Hide Away." Though this album doesn't offer anything that hasn't already been released in some form or another, it does go into slightly more depth than several of the other Stevie Ray Vaughan retrospectives by presenting both his greatest studio hits and some of his best live work. As remakes go, these mixes are far too busy too be effective, but at least there are no wah-wah pedals or synths aboard. There are just too many titles in listed in too jumbled of an order to explain in this review, but every track from #4 almost to the end is not what's printed on the tray card.
