| | Earl Klugh Nightsongs CD - Import Earl Klugh Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Mosaic Records, known for its historic compilations of Blue Note recordings in either box sets or the Mosaic Select series, introduces its Contemporary line with this reissue of Earl Klugh's 1985 recording. At the least, it is a curious anomaly to all the label's other packages. At best, fans of Klugh will be happy to revisit tunes they may have only owned on vinyl. It's primarily the same syrupy orchestrations by Don Sebesky, the same lugubrious after-hours tempos, and Klugh's laid-back, mostly acoustic guitar framing movie themes, ballads, and an occasional standard. The solo acoustic takes of the swing evergreen "Ain't Misbehavin'" and an always bluesy "See See Rider" are still the standout cuts, flute beautifully leads and identifies the wondrous, poignant "Nature Boy" and "A Certain Smile," while oboe fronts the "Theme from Picnic." "Stay Gold" and "Night Song" remain sleepy, while Klugh's take on "The Look of Love" will always be a George Benson imitation. Klugh put out much better efforts, to brighter, less glossed-over effect, on his earlier Blue Note recordings. This one is not all that essential. ~ Michael G. | Nightsongs Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Jewel... I have more than 20 cds with Earl Klugh, and this one is of my 2 or 3 best. The string arrangements are filling the room, there are passages with drums and nice bass too, and the musical richness, here, is unequaled in all Earl Klugh's discography.
In the past, I made a copy cd from my vinyl, playing on a very very good turtable, so I did not have to wait 20 years to get it back in my ears. Lucky you if can discover it today, and at a so cheap price.
The remasterizing is very good, really approaching the sound of the best turtables. A jewel !

Earl and Strings Finally, one of my favorite Earl records
makes it to cd.
This is a sequel to "Late Night Guitar"
and the strings sound really nice
There are also two solos.."Ain`t Misbehavin`" and "See See Rider" and both are great with Earl playing these solos differently than his usual style
The sound is excellent,if you like Earl and you like strings with great arrangements you will love this. Submitted by John (Ajax,Ontario,Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

This ultracool saxman has some of the sexiest moves in smooth jazz and a dreadlock-based look that drives female genre fans wild. He's always focused on passionate, soprano-based tunes to express this sexuality in musical terms, so it's no surprise that one of the best tracks here is the power-passion ballad "Romantica." He's always been successful at adapting his lyrical sound and melodic sense to easy funk tunes, and here plays that middle of the road well on tracks like "Deska" (dedicated to his new bride Desi) and the soul classic "Wishing on a Star." But because we're so familiar with this side of his personality, it's always more fun to hear him fulfill a deeper potential, a bit outside the ...

| | Earl Klugh Wishful Thinking CD (1983) (Import)
Nightsongs CD music
$11.09 Wishful Thinking was recorded in 1983 and 1984, just before Earl Klugh left Capitol Records for the greener pastures of Warner Bros. in 1985. What makes the album compelling -- despite its brief running time, clocking in a bit over 36 minutes -- is that it is a summation, really, of all the places Klugh had been as a player and composer. A self-produced effort, it showcases his wonderfully rhythmic, deeply melodic gift on an acoustic nylon-stringed guitar. From his earliest days with Blue Note almost a decade earlier, Klugh brought something truly different to the table. His sound was rooted in blues, but elegantly and sparely articulated. He brought a soul-jazz approach to everything he touched, but wasn't afraid to allow classical music into his approach; he also looked toward the music of film ...

| | Essence Purity CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Nightsongs songs
$15.39 As with just about every album the group ever did, Purity, the band's debut effort, screams one thing in particular about the Essence -- namely, that the three members want to be the Cure. THEY REALLY WANT TO BE THE CURE. This can't be stated enough because frankly, it's true, and while one should allow for first efforts tending to be derivative anyway, Purity really takes the biscuit. With the same style lineup as that band had in its earliest days -- guitar/bass/drums -- playing much the same musical efforts that the Cure did, and with Diener sounding almost exactly like Robert Smith, what more can be said? Then there are the song titles -- on this album, samples include "The Waving Girl," "A Reflected Dream," and "From My Mouth." It's ...
| | Art Blakey Night At Birdland Vol. 1 CD (1954) Remastered
Nightsongs album
$7.99 Recorded live at Birdland, New York, New York on February 21, 1954. Originally released on Bluenote (1521). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
When Pee-Wee Marquette, emcee of Birdland, introduces Art Blakey and his quintet, the audience in attendance erupts in enthusiastic applause. Rightly so; this is a powerful group in full stride. A NIGHT AT BIRDLAND VOL. ONE captures Blakey's pre-Messengers quintet on an evening in February 1954 with legendary trumpeter Clifford Brown and alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson holding down the front line. Longtime partners Blakey and pianist Horace Silver, as well as talented bassist Curley Russell, propel the relentless rhythm section.
The results of that eventful night are now preserved so that we may become patrons of the once legendary nightspot. The fiery mambo "Split Kick" opens the set showcasing Blakey's assertive drumming and the fine blowing of Brown and Donaldson. Silver's bebop-style "Quicksilver" also provides a stunning vehicle for the group's lightning-quick dexterity. Turning the tide, the slow and sultry "Blues" is a totally improvised jam that provides some down-and-dirty solos by the horns and piano. Of course, the highlight of the ...
