As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great Balls Of Fire), and "Gunnin' For Peter" stand loud and proud as teen hall pre-Beatle rock & roll at its finest. Let me tell you something about each song on this album:According to the Oxford dictionary, the word "Animus" means to "Animate the spirit". Each track on this album was chosen because of the "feel" which it captures. This collection carries some traditional and contemporary folk songs, plus many new compositions. It's a no frills recording, just simple voice and plain guitars. It sounds as stark as a lone busker, singing in a deserted metro subway.The CD starts with an early studio version, of 'The 7th July'. This is a song about the London bombing and it was really difficult for me to write and to complete it. For example, after this particular take was recorded in the studio, the words of the song still continued to evolve and change. Like metamophosis it became the song entitled 'Shadows', which is featured on the 'Snowship' album. Finally it became 'The 7th July London Tragedy' and is on the latest "Earthbound" album. Apart from a couple of small changes in emphasis, this is how I now perform it live.This version of 'Scarborough Fair' is based on the traditional arrangement of the UK folksinger, Martin Carthy. Many years ago, my dear friend the late Tommy Yates wrote 'Rumours' and 'Life Ahead'. He also used to play them this way (D-tuned bass string). The fabulous Mary Asquith taught me 'Cane On the Brassos', way back in Manchester when I was just starting to perform in the folk clubs. I'll never forget Mary, or that song.The talented UK guitarist Steve Odd plays live on both the 'Lemon Tree' and 'Free As a Bird'.
