Although best known in the US for their later music, which combined Celtic roots with new age and pop influences, the Irish sibling group Clannad started as a traditional Irish folk group. Indeed, all but three tracks on the group's second album, from 1974, are in Gaelic. The acoustic instrumentation, heavy on the harp and pennywhistle, is lovely but unobtrusive, so that all the focus is on lead singer Maire Brennan's astounding voice. Every bit as elastic as that of her youngest sister Enya, who would go on to worldwide stardom after a brief early '80s stint in the family business, but much more assertive and less breathy, Maire's voice is one of the most stunning instruments in Celtic music, and it's heard to its best advantage on this album. As a survey of the first quarter century or so of Clannad's recording career, this double-CD compilation is intelligently selected and annotated. It draws pretty evenly from the various phases of the group's lifespan, from their most traditional folk-based albums in 1973 and 1974 to the slicker rock, pop, and new age-influenced sounds that gave them some crossover pop success in Europe and America in the 1980s and 1990s. Their most well-known tracks, and cuts with celebrity cameos, are here: the big early-'80s British hit "Harry's Game," "In a Lifetime" (with Bono of U2), "Something to Believe In" (with Bruce Hornsby), "I Will Find You (Theme From 'The Last of the Mohicans')," and four early-'80s songs on which a young Enya (then known as Eithne Brennan) was a vocalist with the band. No criticism can be levied at the packaging, complete with a 44-page booklet of liner notes. What's more problematic is the variation in quality, as the band changes from an exciting group who merged traditional Irish folk with folk-rock and jazz to a less-exciting, still folk-based one to a more successful but blander group who submerged the folk deeper in contemporary mainstream pop, rock, and new age production. The break is particularly noticeable toward the end of disc one: prior to that point the collection is wholly comprised of traditional material, but it then switches primarily to group originals for the rest of the anthology. Light Of Day: A Tribute To Bruce Springsteen CDs (2003)

This release designed for the German market is identical to Big Eye's 2003 Tribute to Bruce Springsteen. There's different cover art, and it names Shane Torrel, the guy who contributes eager, yet somewhat needless versions of Springsteen hits like "Cover Me" and "Dancing in the Dark." But there's no difference in the recordings themselves. There's some inspired pipe work from Eric Rigler on "Born in the USA," and Little Milton's soulful, contemporary blues version of "I'm on Fire" is nice. But those highlights are few and far between on this well-meaning, but lacking compilation. ~ Johnny Loftus Not quite as impressive as 1997's One Step Up/Two Steps Back: The Songs of Bruce Springsteen, with whom it shares two artists (E Street guitarist Nils Lofgren and this album's artistic director, Elliott Murphy), Light of Day: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen presents 37 tracks also spread over two discs. Interestingly, only six songs are duplicated, and different artists perform them. This is not only a testament to Springsteen's quantity of work, but a cursory listen to these songs shows the quality as well. In any case, there is a lot of music here. The focus is Springsteen as singer/songwriter, which results in a large proportion of unplugged strumming guitars and rootsy, rearranged versions with an emphasis on vocals and lyrics. The acts range from the well-known but not quite superstars (Elvis Costello, Cowboy Mouth, Pete Yorn, Billy Bragg) to recognizable club-sized performers (Patty Griffin, Graham Parker, Steve Wynn, the Clarks) to obscure but heartfelt musicians (everyone else). Given the approach, albums such as Tunnel of Love and especially Nebraska are mined for their more introspective tunes. Still, there are a fair share of rockers here (Parker's "Pink Cadillac," Joe Grushecky's "Light of Day") although except for a frantic "Born to Run" from Cowboy Mouth, most are slowed down or given a more sensitive reading. Released in 2003, there are no tracks from either The Rising or 1995's The Ghost of Tom Joad and only a few from 1992's Human Touch and Lucky Town. The disc does unearth some interesting obscurities -- Lofgren's version of "Man at the Top," Marc Broussard's "Back in Your Arms," the Paradise Brothers' "Souls of the Departed" among them -- that spotlight Springsteen's less popular work. Most of the music has been recorded specifically for this project -- a benefit for Parkinson's disease and sarcoma, a rare form of cancer -- but some such as Dion's beautiful "Book of Dreams," Griffin's lonely "Stolen Car," and Mark Wright's "Two Hearts" have been previously released on these artists' albums. Each comes with a short but incisive commentary from the performer. Even though some of the rearrangements are radical (Kirk Kelly strips "Downbound Train" to just ukulele!), they all convey the songs' emotions, in some cases arguably better than the originals. With two and a half hours of music, the album is best taken in small doses where the listener can soak it all in. Nonetheless, this is a successful project, one that does what it sets out to do, and should be embraced by Springsteen aficionados as well as fans of the acts involved. ~ Hal Horowitz Big ...
