Intuition
$6.49 After helping singer David Coverdale reinvent Whitesnake both sonically and aesthetically for the image-conscious American market, guitar hero John Sykes acrimoniously left the group when it became apparent that there was only room enough for one overblown ego in it: Coverdale's. Hardly ones to let a good thing slip away, though, the executives at Whitesnake's label, Geffen Records (specifically A&R super-guru John Kalodner), immediately signed Sykes to a new development deal and proceeded to aid and abet him in founding his own supergroup, Blue Murder, with veteran bassist Tony Franklin and nearly geriatric drummer Carmine Appice (whose career probably started before Sykes was even born!). Released in 1989, the power trio's eponymous debut was produced to pompous perfection by none other than Bob Rock, whose golden ears for bombastic yet consumer-friendly '80s metal were truly second to none at the time -- other than the one and only Mutt Lange, of course. And perhaps more than any of Rock's jobs prior to his hook-up with Metallica, Blue Murder proves it, thanks to songs ranging from muscular power-chord hell-fests like "Riot" ...
| | Don Dokken Up From The Ashes CD (1990)
Intuition
$6.19 This 1990 debut solo offering from Don Dokken is perhaps the softest, most middle-of-the-road collection in the singer's long melodic-rock career. Fans of '80s hair metal certainly count the band that carried Dokken's name as one of the premier outfits of the decade. But when their guitar-slinging histrionics, sad-faced ballads, and colorful outfits became highly unfashionable, the group couldn't sustain themselves through the constant fighting between the singer and guitarist George Lynch. The on-again off-again relationship was off for five years during the early '90s. Lynch made some noise with his own band, Lynch Mob (proving that he could write decent songs without the help of Dokken), and Dokken released Up From the Ashes, a pale collection of forgettable near-balladry. Joining the vocalist on this disc are guitarist/songwriter John Norum (most notable for his work with Europe), guitarist The Billy White, bassist Peter Baltes, and drummer Mickey Dee. Only fans of the mellowest pre-solo Dokken material will have any chance of enjoying this collection. The record is well-produced, and the performances ...

| | Strawberry Alarm Clock World In A Sea Shell CD (1968)
Intuition
$11.39 The third long-player from Strawberry Alarm Clock runs the gamut of pop music. This unfortunately detracts from the album's cohesion instead of unifying it. As with their previous release Wake Up...It's Tomorrow, The World in a Sea Shell offers a few criminally overlooked tracks. However, for the most part, the contents vacillate between the saccharine sweetness of the mid-tempo opening track "Sea Shell" and the overly orchestrated "An Angry Young Man" and "Home Sweet Home." Any cohesive momentum from the first two LPs has seemingly been discarded for the external input of different writers. Increasingly, the band began to turn externally for material. This was partially due to pressures from producers Bill Holmes and Frank Slay, who brought in Roy Freeman to write lyrics for the band because -- in the words of bassist and composer George Bunnell -- "they thought we were awful at it." Contributions also come from the somewhat unlikely team of Carole King and Toni Stern. "Blues for a Young Girl Gone" and "Lady of the Lake" are akin to the stuff the pair was concurrently writing for the likes of the Monkees. Both suffer the double-edged sword of having such a strong voice written into them. They end up ...
| | Rookie Of The Year Goodnight Moon CD (2006)
Intuition
$11.85 The debut album by emo-tinged indie rockers Rookie of the Year originally started as a solo project by singer/songwriter Ryan Dunson, and most of The Goodnight Moon sounds it, to the point that one suspects that at least some of these songs were constructed by recording electric guitar, keyboards, bass and drums over Dunson's existing acoustic guitar and vocal tracks. As a result of these relatively static song structures, there's a samey quality to The Goodnight Moon that detracts from Dunson's appealingly boyish vocals and solid melodic sense; "Set the ...
| | Commonwealth of Pennsylvania CO Live @ The 81ST Annual Holy Convocation CD (2001)
Intuition
$9.85 The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Church of God in Christ Mass Choir presents their second release, recorded "LIVE" in Philadelphia. This current release includes more anointed material by this outstanding choir. On a balmy August evening just days before our Nation experienced one of the greatest tragedies in history (9/11/2001), it was as if a prophetic message came forth "I am what I am by the grace of God." This recording, under the leadership of the Assistant ...
| | Best Of Bar-Kays: 20th Century Masters Of The Millennium Collection CD (2005) Remastered
Intuition
$8.15 The Bar-Kays began their career in the mold of the Mar-Keys and Booker T. and the M.G.s, playing cool, funky, R&B instrumentals for Memphis's Stax-Volt label. By the mid-1970s, however, the band had pushed its sound to keep up with the times, riding fierce funk grooves embellished by squiggly synthesizer and electronically manipulated vocals. That the Bar-Kays sounded suddenly closer to Parliament than Sam & Dave seemed to suit the band just fine, because their singles from the late-'70s, collected here on THE BEST ...
