South Of Heaven album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

South Of Heaven album
$8.35 Digitally remastered by Eddie Schreyer (November 1993, Future Disc).
Boasting the awesome "Chemical Warfare," a regular staple of Slayer's live shows, the Haunting the Chapel EP was a more crucial stepping stone in the legendary L.A. band's career development than many give it credit for. Issued in between the band's very promising debut and the following year's more sonically ripened Hell Awaits, Haunting ...

| | Rosemary Clooney White Christmas CD (1996)
South Of Heaven music CDs
$8.39 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Includes liner notes by Nick Clooney, Glen Barros, Dolores Hope and Bob Hope.
Although Rosemary Clooney had a major part in the famous film White Christmas back in 1954, this was her first full Christmas album and it was a big seller when it was released late in 1996. From the jazz standpoint, there is not much here, as Clooney is accompanied by a huge orchestra conducted and mostly arranged by Peter Matz. Although there are a few brief solos from altoist Gary Foster, tenor saxophonist Dan Higgins, trombonist Chauncey Welsch and trumpeter Warren Luening, the music is essentially nostalgic middle-of-the-road pop with Clooney joined on several numbers by the Earl Brown Singers (who also take brief a cappella versions of some veteran Christmas tunes); one tune apiece ...

South Of Heaven songs
$10.19 When guitarist George Lynch left the '90s Dokken reunion after three albums (ONE LIVE NIGHT, DYSFUNCTIONAL, and SHADOW LIFE), the remaining members, singer Don Dokken, bassist Jeff Pilson, and drummer Mick Brown, decided to find a replacement and carry on. That replacement came in the form of Reb Beach, a name familiar to many aficionados of '80s hair metal--he was a founding member of macho rockers Winger.
Beach proved to be more than ...
| | George Robert Inspiration CD (2000)
South Of Heaven album
$13.45 Alto saxophonist George Robert shines during this 1999 concert in Lausanne, Switzerland, with the exemplary rhythm section of Kenny Barron, Rufus Reid, and Kenny Washington accompanying him. Six of the eight songs are originals by the leader, written especially for this quartet. "Blues for C.T." is dedicated to trumpeter and flügelhornist Clark Terry, who Robert added as a special guest on previous recordings (including the outstanding Live at Q4); this joyful blues will put a smile on any jazz fan's face. The pretty ballad "Mom's Song" honors Robert's mother, who had passed away in 1997. There are also enjoyable tributes by Robert to Cannonball Adderley ("Cannonization") and Dexter Gordon ("Dexter") that pay homage by capturing the spirit of each musician rather than mimicking their respective styles. Robert also honors Kenny Barron (who was very likely the most recorded jazz pianist of the 1990s, as one listen ...
| | Ursula Rucker Supa Sista CD (2001) (Import) Germany
South Of Heaven CD music
$13.69 Spoken word poetry is something of an acquired taste, and the debut from Philadelphia native Ursula Rucker, though promising, is unlikely to bring many new converts to the movement. The poetess has made quite a name for herself over the years, working with artists ranging from techno titans like King Britt and Josh Wink to hometown hip-hoppers the Roots and Bahamadia. On Supa Sista, she gets her turn in the spotlight, with a subdued speech pattern and sultry vocal cadences well-suited to the airy trip-hop grooves that back most of the tracks. Songs like "What???" and "One Million Ways to Burn" work wonderfully, the former matching aggressive lyrics about the state of black music today against 4 Hero's urgent rhythms, the latter pairing her sexy voice with a sensual funk groove from Jonah Sharp to create a perfect soundtrack for horizontal entwinement. But on some tracks, repetitive grooves or insistent chants prove irritating, taking the listener out of the mood the other tunes worked so hard to create. Still, all in all a fine debut. ~ Bret Love

| | Caliche Con Carne Goat Songs 2 The Flesh CD (2006)
South Of Heaven CD music
$10.25 Newly re-mastered "Goat Songs II: The Flesh" is a fifteen song cycle that takes the listener on a journey through the conception, birth, and first few months of life for Cheza and Kahawa, two young Nubian bucks. Back from the first "Goat Songs" are Maddy-Bonga and Delilah, the mother and "aunt" and elder members of the small herd. Written by James Jordan, the new cycle is an extension on the original cycle, which portrayed one typical day for the milk goats. Jordan proudly maintians that, "Taken together, you can learn everything you need to know about raising and keeping dairy goats from these two song cycles. I like to think of them as the Moby Dicks of the caprine world."Listeners are forewarned that "Goat Songs II: The Flesh" is rife with graphic language regarding goat procreation and sexual habits, as well as two songs which deal frankly and unabashedly with the subject of young male goat castration. It has been suggested that the deep affection with which Jordan writes of his goats indicates a, perhaps, untoward relationship between him and the herd. Jordan confronts these accusations directly in his song "I Won't Cross That Line", wherein he compares his loving, but THOROUGHLY DECENT !! participation in this little goat herd with the utterly exploitative and perverse practices encountered in the ranching and farming industries, especially in the collection of bull and rooster semen, and in the general poor housing and treatment of farm animals. Nevertheless, ...
