Southern Harmony & Musical Companion album
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound ...

| | Michael Buble Call Me Irresponsible CD (2007)
Southern Harmony & Musical Companion songs
$10.09 Michael Buble ranks among the best of the contemporary crooners working in a classic pop-vocal style, and his 2007 album, CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE, further refines his suave, smooth style. With its finger-snapping big band arrangements, the album has its share of homage to Frank and Dino, both obvious cornerstones of Buble's music. But this isn't merely a retro exercise; the tunes, the production, and the overall feel are decidedly contemporary.
Stylistically adventurous versions of songs by Eric ...

| | Dexateens Red Dust Rising CD (2005)
Southern Harmony & Musical Companion songs
$11.39 Now that the Drive-By Truckers have made it a bit less socially unacceptable to express an enthusiasm for Southern rock, the Dexateens -- who were wailing hard and blowing out amps on their self-titled debut -- have decided to embrace their Alabama roots with a set of tunes that owes more to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Oak Arkansas than the Quadrajets or the Hellacopters. Much of Red Dust Rising sounds like it could have been recorded for Capricorn Records in the early '70s, but with one important difference -- while too many of the great Southern rock bands made records that polished off all their rough edges, Red Dust Rising leaves the grit intact and puts it front and center (and with Tim Kerr as your producer, you would expect nothing less). The easygoing but muscular guitar interplay of Elliott McPherson and John Smith packs a bit less wallop than it did on their first album, but still generates plenty of crunch and a potent undertow of redneck soul, with the occasional dollops of lap steel and banjo adding seasoning to the stew. Bassist Matt Patton and drummer Craig Pickering keep things simmering nicely despite the slower ...
| | Dusty Springfield Complete A & B Sides 1963-1970 CD (2006) (Import) Germany
Southern Harmony & Musical Companion album
$17.89 It's practically a cliché to say that Dusty Springfield was the greatest white soul singer to ever come out of the U.K., but like most clichés, it's a commonplace wisdom that's based in an obvious fact. While most blue-eyed soul belters sounded as if they were determined to worry a song into submission though brute force and melismatic torture, Springfield's gift was a superb instrument and the wisdom to do its work with a careful balance of emotional force and instinctive restraint (perhaps the product of her fondness for jazz and smart pop as well as rock and R&B). Springfield was also a gifted songwriter who was a shrewd judge of material, and she knew how to match her voice to either Phil Spector-esque bombast or a more subtle and elegant production, and anyone looking for a perspective on just how sure Springfield's instincts in the studio were should give a listen to this set. Complete A and B Sides 1963-1970 is just what its title says it is -- every U.K. single Dusty released during this eight-year stretch is included (except for a stray Yuletide release), with all the A-sides on disc one and the flip sides on disc two (except for the B-side to "Morning Please Don't Come," which was a solo track from her brother Tom Springfield and subsequently left by the wayside). The consistent quality of these recordings is truly a wonder -- there are no throwaway B-sides, no major artistic missteps, and every tune appears to been crafted as if Springfield and her studio helpers were convinced it could be a hit (and in a wiser alternate universe, perhaps they all were). While American fans will ...
