| | Dream Theater Train Of Thought CD (2003)
Moons & Mushrooms album
$11.05 TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect. This outing continues in the heavier mode that began with 2002's SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, reaching even further into darker, personal lyrical themes.
Guitars are the dominant expressive voice here, with keyboards scaled considerably back from the signature Dream Theater sound. Band members Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) continue their do-it-yourself production approach, opting for recording venues on their native Long Island (much of the band's album work has taken place in upstate New York at Bear Tracks and Little Bear Studios). "As I Am" and "This Dying Soul" at times borrow generously from Metallica, featuring that band's well-known use of tri-tones, and vocalist ...
| | Savatage Hall Of The Mountain King CD (1987)
Moons & Mushrooms CD music
$8.39 With band members, critics, and fans unhappy with the commercialism of Fight for the Rock, Savatage began to disintegrate. However the new found acquaintance of producer Paul O'Neill not only changed the group's fortunes but soon pointed them in new directions. O'Neill, who was looking for a metal band to record some of his musical ideas, agreed to produce the group's next album, which became Hall of the Mountain King. A return to the form of Dungeons Are Calling, Hall of the Mountain King was the great album the band had always threatened to make. Featuring blistering guitar riffs, numerous tempo changes, and over-the-top screeching vocals, Savatage were finally captured by decent production after two albums of attempts to put a ...
| | Glasseater CD (2002)
Moons & Mushrooms music CDs
$12.39 Glasseater is a band with a major image complex. Is it a punk-pop band? Is it a hardcore band? Perhaps it's neither; maybe it's both. Glasseater's self-titled album starts out with a slick, poppy punk tune, "Medicine." The second track begins in the same manner until halfway through the song, whereupon demonic sounding vocals pipe in on the chorus with "They don't understand!" and the uninitiated Glasseater listener can't help but raise an eyebrow. It sounds so out of place it seems to be almost ridiculous. The punk-pop stuff was sounding pretty good, as the singer has a good voice and the musicianship is tight. There are some great hooks, and tunes like "Miles Ahead" showcase some spectacular harmonies on the chorus. ...

Longtime fans of Sepultura who feared that ex-leader Max Cavalera would conform to the tempting (and lucrative) alternative music scene upon his departure need not worry. Like his last release with Sepultura, the superb Roots, experimentation (Brazilian tribal drumming/rhythms, samples, unearthly sound effects, etc.) is a catalyst here on Soulfly, but gut-wrenching heavy metal is the foundation for almost all of the tracks. The energy and intensity don't let up for a second throughout this debut, as heard on the grinding tracks "Eye for an Eye," "Bumbklaatt," and "The Song Remains Insane." Max had stated in interviews his fondness for reggae legend Bob Marley, and the title track proves to be his first foray into reggae/dub territory (and serves as a nice break from the rest of the album's over the top metal). The ...
