| | Metallica Garage Inc. CDs (1998)
Moons & Mushrooms
$19.39 GARAGE INC. includes the GARAGE DAYS RE-REVISITED EP as well as rare B-sides and newly recorded covers.
Disc one recorded at The Plant Studios, Sausalito, California in September & October 1998. Disc two recorded at various locations between 1984 and 1998. Includes liner notes by David Fricke.
"Whiskey In The Jar" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
Anybody who's anybody in rock has been in a cover band. Although "cover" has a negative connotation, it is the playing of others' material that forges the identity and agenda of future superstars. Every recorded cover tune from Metallica plus 11 newly recorded covers are included in this double-CD set. They combine to give fans a glimpse into the wide variety of influences that have shaped metal's mightiest band.
Disc one is the new material, and Metallica place their undeniable stamp on each track. Transforming Bob Seger's midtempo "Turn the Page" into a real rocker, and converting Nick Cave's "Loverman" into sheer brutality. Closer to the mark of Metallica's style, ...
| | Critters Buggin Bumpa CD (1998) (Import) Japan
Moons & Mushrooms
$34.95 These wicked dance/funk/soul/rock/avant garde/acid jazz/freak-out-ers have always been consistant in their stylistic inconsistancy. This Japanese edition of their acclaimed 1998 set includes the bonus track "New Luck Poodle Store," as well as "Flouride," "Brozo The Clone," "Bomb Ass Tick," and "Fast Johnson."
To be "buggin' out" is to be visibly obsessing and prone to exaggerated emotional displays. That is, when someone is "buggin' out," it is as if their eyes are about to "bug out" of their heads. Critters Buggin' freely "bug out" over a simple idea on this album of heavy rock-based electronica. The lineup of Critters is an impressive roster of traveled and experienced musicians that have, at various times, been part of Pearl Jam, John Doe's band, Spin Doctors, Edie Brickell's New Bohemians, Wayne Horvitz' group, and beyond. The opening cut is a tough, "funkoid" bassline that careens wildly (as an out of control truck) around a tirade against the evils of water fluoridation. The fluoride concerned monologist could be the young voice of Negatviland's David Wills. The piece dissipated like evaporating tap water into a free jazz horn solo. That free jazz melody takes on teeth as more funk tonnage drops in with long-noted, descending keyboard lines and brooding cellos in "Brozo the Clown." The most interesting rhythms are a jerky floor tom and tom-tom upholding what sounds to be a cocky baritone sax in call and answer with a maudlin tenor saxophone. This mind-bending trio takes a dada (Zappa, Beefheart, etc.) approach to integrating horns and a funk-rock rhythm section à la Soul Coughing. ~ Tom Schulte

| | Hanoi Rocks Two Steps From The Move CD (1984) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; United Kingdom
Moons & Mushrooms
$17.95 Had Razzle not died so tragically, there's every reason to believe that Hanoi Rocks could easily have taken things to the next level of hard rock glory. As it is, Two Steps from the Move will have to remain a testimony to what might have been instead of a further springboard. "Up Around the Bend" may have been little more than an easy way of getting a chart hit, but they still got one nonetheless, and the energetic way the band handled the CCR classic showed they were no slouches with the material. Working with Bob Ezrin was the more notable change here; with Dale Buffin Griffin and "Overend" Pete Watts having given Hanoi Rocks their best production yet with Back to the Mystery City, the legendary hard rock producer showed he still had the touch with his work on Two Steps from the Move. He also seemed to have his hand in all the band's doings -- nearly all the songs on the album are co-written efforts between Ezrin and various bandmembers, while he contributes everything from percussion to vocals. Given that Hanoi Rocks never made any pretense at being immediate and catchy, it's hardly a case of selling out, more a matter of a pro making everything better -- and that he does. In terms of combining the attitude, gang shouts, punk energy, and classic rock burn of the band, things couldn't be better ...
