| | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
Tender Hooks
$8.78 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE ...

| | Johnny Clarke Rockers Time Now CDs (1976)
Tender Hooks
$12.79 One of the crucial albums of the 1970s, Johnny Clarke delivers up a masterpiece in a mere 12 tracks. Produced by Bunny Lee, at the height of his "flying cymbals" work, Rockers Time Now, contrary to its title, doesn't so much rock as find the perfect lackadaisical groove, and slides along it into nirvana. If the Jamaican term "irae" had a musical personification, Rockers would be it. Clarke's own laid back, unruffled delivery dovetails perfectly, and Lee's equally easy going houseband The Aggrovators were the perfect music complement. Several of the songs are covers that on paper seem to be recipes for disaster, like The Abyssinians' militant "Declaration Of Rights." But miraculously it works brilliantly, as if the revolution had come without bloodshed, with Babylon brought to ruins by a haze of ganja smoke. That haze swirls around "Satta Massa Gana" as well, conjuring up a dream world Africa, an exquisite paradise far removed from the real world. ...

| | Shirley Caesar You Can Make It CD (2000)
Tender Hooks
$5.95 YOU CAN MAKE IT won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.
Shirley Caesar has a masterful command of gospel praise song, and "Lift Him Up," which comes right in the middle of You Can Make It, is a practically generic example of the style, with its frantic tempo, excited chorus, and repeated exhortations to "Praise His name!" Caesar, of course, both leads the choir and provides emotive variations. You might say that the album breaks down into two types of songs, ones like "Lift Him Up" that start out at a pitch of excitement and stay there throughout, and others like the title song that proceed at a slower pace and begin more quietly, only to build to a fervent climax. But within the strictures of the form, Caesar demonstrates a willingness to incorporate elements of other pop music styles, sometimes ones that are known for being influenced by gospel. You could listen to the first part of the opening track, "Rejoice," and almost think you had put a James Brown record on by mistake, as the music takes a funky turn. "You Can Make It" sounds like a Patti LaBelle ballad for much of its run, while the horn-filled "Nicodemus" has a 1970s pop sound that recalls the rock band Chicago. But Caesar's throaty, impassioned voice is unmistakable, and she's at her ...

Tender Hooks
$11.49 TIM ARMACOST has led a life of constant motion. He has gathered knowledge and experience around the globe, which forms the foundation of his passionate brand of jazz. After landing in New York in 1993, Armacost quickly established his presence as a leader, releasing his first two albums, “Fire” (Concord) and “Live at Smalls” (Double Time) to critical acclaim. His hard hitting third release, “The Wishing Well,” (Double Time) announced the arrival of Armacost’s working unit, featuring Bruce Barth, Ray Drummond, and Billy Hart. The group has completed six successful tours in Europe and Asia, working with sponsors Northwest Airlines, Marriott Hotels and Volkswagen, and followed up with an inspired second recording, “Brightly Dark.” (Satchmo Records). Armacost’s current release, “Rhythm and Transformation,” (ArtistShare 0064) features the quartet augmented by Ray Spiegel playing Tabla, and the great Eddie Henderson on trumpet. Working with his quartet, the cooperative group Hornz in the Hood with fellow saxophonists Craig Handy and Ravi Coltrane, Ray Drummond’s “Excursion Band,” and co-leading the Brooklyn Big Band with Craig Bailey, Armacost is now seriously in the mix. Armacost's career is already distinguished by performance and recording credits alongside the likes of Al Foster, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Billy Hart, Victor Lewis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Peter Erskine, Ray Drummond, Roy Hargrove, Paquito D'Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Bruce Barth, Dave Kikoski, Don Friedman, Lonnie Plaxico, Robin Eubanks, Charlie Shoemake, Pete Christlieb, Randy Brecker, Akira Tana, Valery Ponomarev, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and the David Murray Big Band. He has toured throughout East and West Europe, Japan, India, and the United States. Armacost describes his early upbringing as a pendulum swing between his hometown of Los ...
