| | Babils Joint Between CD Babils Discography of CDs
The influence of Makoto Kawabata's Acid Mothers Temple is palpable throughout Babils' first official album. Does it mean that this French group is a clone of AMT? Not exactly. In fact, if this five-piece does take some serious cues from the almighty Japanese crew, there are also enough noticeable differences and idiosyncratic quirks to make this group interesting and worthy of your time. Of particular importance is the presence of trumpeter Lukas Vangheluwe's, whose elephant calls have inspired the album's cover artwork. The trumpet provides the group with a signature sound of sorts and helps set it aside from other heavy psychedelic rock bands. The Joint Between offers ten tracks ranging from single length to improvisations over ten minutes long. Some tracks are overtly experimental and sound/noise-based (in that vein, "Drache" is particularly successful), but most pieces are solid groove-based tunes. For instance, "Hommes Éléphants" ("Elephant Men"), "Préventorium" and "Procrasti" are all driven by plodding beats and drenched in noise guitar. "Hommes Éléphants" has an apocalyptic feel that turns out to be more entertaining than menacing after six minutes. The extended "Dent de Sagesse" (with guest Sébastien Mary on flute) illustrates that, just like AMT, Babils can easily switch from head-numbing acid rock to pastoral space folk. If you like your space rock loud, echo-drenched, daring and slightly tongue in cheek, you should find this debut opus to be very promising. ~ François Couture
2007 debut album from the Brussels-based quintet. The Joint Between could be compared to elephants running in a chaotic urban landscape. It's a massive hour of Psychedelic influences and disturbed layers of UFO guitars, dreamy bass lines, distorted trumpets and repeated drums. Some will recognize Babils founder and multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Severin (aka Silksaw), who has released many projects on notorious labels such as Sub Rosa and Ant-Zen. Some others will simply fall, head-first, into these dynamic and unforgettable rivers of steady melodies. The Joint Between is heavy and dense, loud and hypnotic, but in the end it is a must-have for everyone willing to take extended journeys into their own brightest thoughts. This is infinite, tripped-out heaviness. Still. Compilation producer: Chris Blackwell. Reissue producers: Bill Levinson, Dana Smart. Digitally remastered by Gary Moore & Gavin Lurssen. When Island Records released the double-LP soundtrack to Countryman in the spring of 1982, ten years after the appearance of The Harder They Come, it was easy to see that company founder Chris Blackwell was looking to do for the current state of reggae what he had done before, i.e., promote it via a various-artists sampler that happened to have a cinematic tie-in. In this case, the movie itself was nowhere to be found, not even at the college campus midnight showings that had given birth to the cult ...
| | Patrick O'Hearn Glaciation CD (2007)
Joint Between
$12.39 Patrick O’Hearn: Glaciation (self-released)It’s been awhile since a disc of ethereal, slow-moving instrumental music (this once would have been called “new age”) has captured my imagination like Patrick O’Hearn’s Glaciation has. Like the glaciers and icebergs that adorn the lovely CD package, these compositions have a spare, mysterious, other-worldly beauty. I mean to pay this release a high compliment when I note that some of this music recalls the most evocative work of Brian Eno, in the way O’Hearn places the instruments in different ambient fields and the way the tunes unfold so naturally and majestically. But far from being just a keyboard/synth workout, this features many other textures, from pulsing basses to electric Hawaiian guitar (recalling Eno’s gorgeous Apollo) to percussion. All in all, it’s a wondrous trip!— Mix magazine, January 2008Glaciation. Even the word sounds slow. It sounds cold, imposing, and something so much bigger than we can fully understand. For over 20 ...
