Less the thinking man's metal band than they are the flat-out egghead's metal band, veteran loud-heavy experimentalists Neurosis released GIVEN TO THE RISING, their ninth studio album in 2007 on their own label, Neurot Recordings. Pummeling drums, angry guitars, and vicious vocals form the strong musical foundation, but they quickly give way to odd tunings, dark foreboding drones, and high-concept aesthetic twists and turns. Produced once again by Steve Albini, Neurosis continues to demonstrate why they're one of the most respected bands in heavy music with each subsequent release. GIVEN TO THE RISING arrives as perhaps their most fully realized and perfectly executed album to date.

Spin (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Track after track, pretenders to the throne are slashed and burned with detailed dynamics, elephantine riffs, and actual grooves." Alternative Press (p.166) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[They imbue] their own impossibly epic ruminations with a near-biblical sense of high drama..." CMJ (p.37) - "In many ways, this is Neurosis' heaviest album, not only musically, but emotionally....Neurosis has truly transcended 'heavy metal' on this album." If you consider yourself a fan of metal you really have to have this CD. You also need to listen to it about 10 -20 times before it's magic will be revealed to you. Excellent return Neurosis has continually evolved over time, and though they have always been intriguing, their sound is hard to pin down. It is a mix of chaotic, tribal-sounding heaviness and tripped-out minimalism. On their last record the minimalism came to the fore, with interesting results. Here, they have returned to the doom sounds that we know so well. This album feels like a perfect synthesis of all the styles they've attempted before. Altogether, this is perhaps their best album...time will tell. Submitted by Tighearnan (Dublin, Eire) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Why? The first listen just leaves me wanting something with some meat-hell even the reviled Nickelback sounds heavy compared to this. As a first time listener I can't seem to understand why they generate so much underground buzz. They play and sing with such timidity. I expected intense and apocolyptic and instead get plodding arrangements that never crystalize into...anything. The guitars remind me of Pelican, ie no chunk at all. Sorry-I hate getting burned buying a CD-at least the cover art rocks. Submitted by angry chair (Bozeman, MT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Given To The Rising album
$11.65 Neurosis built their reputation on -- to put it one way -- long-winded compositions, making their albums a challenging listening experience for even the most dedicated fans. And their fifth album, Through Silver in Blood, doesn't buck the trend, diving headlong into the group's entirely unique experiments in ambient, progressive death metal with the mesmerizing 12-minute title track. With the exception of two minute-long interludes, much of the remaining material follows this blueprint, with abnormally long ...
| | Neurosis Eye Of Every Storm CD (2004)
Given To The Rising CD music
$12.79 Veteran acts like Neurosis can only stay alive through constant evolution, and THE EYE OF EVERY STORM is yet another dramatic step in the Bay Area group's long, strange journey. Whereas previous albums could be considered studies in heaviness with moments of reflection and meditation, THE EYE OF EVERY STORM shifts the focus to a stronger emphasis on atmosphere and mood, with temporary squalls of heavy metal thunder punctuating the explorations.
Similar in spirit to minimalist post-metal acts like Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Isis, the songs employ instruments outside of the usual metal borders, with Moog synthesizers and pianos accenting the guitar, bass, and drums. The vocals of Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly have also changed, as the rugged bark of previous albums has mutated into a gritty gutter croon. All of this ...
| | Isis Panopticon CD (2004)
Given To The Rising music CDs
$13.05 If the glacial dynamics of previous metal and hardcore abstractions Celestial and Oceanic didn't prove that Isis was a heavy band in every sense, then Panopticon should do the trick. The title comes from 18th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham's prison design, which was later referenced by Michael Foucault in the 20th century. The idea is that a centrally placed guard or watcher can keep track of a large number of prisoners, and it excited Bentham and concerned Foucault. Heavy stuff for a metal band, huh? Both are quoted in the liner notes, bookended by aerial industrial photos laying out society's open sprawl. It fits perfectly with the epic music on the disc itself, which is as angular as post-rock forefathers Slint and as cosmically expansive as Neurosis, yet closer to the intensity of hardcore ...
