Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (TOTAL RECALL, ROBOCOP) mixes big budget bug bashing with twisted satire of old Hollywood movies in this adaptation of Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel. It's the future, Earth is at war, and the kids are all going off to fight giant killer bugs on the remote planet of Klendathu. Casper Van Diem, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, and Patrick Muldoon play some of the blandly attractive young recruits who engage in soap-opera style love triangles as they toughen up and learn to fight (and die) like soldiers. Michael Ironside is their gung-ho, one-armed leader. The real stars though, are the superbly animated bugs. Packed to the rafters with jaw-dropping special effects and insane violence, the film managed to be a box office hit though it undoubtedly left some audiences confused at Verhoeven's slyly deadpan humor. By the time Neil Patrick Harris (TV's Doogie Howser) starts marching around in a Gestapo-style uniform, for example, it will be apparent this isn't STAR WARS. What it is however, is a rousing experience for mature viewers in the properly ironic frame of mind. Starship Troopers Quotes/Excerpts: "Would you like to know more?"--a slogan that appears frequently in newreel clips
"Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. The contrary opinion that violence doesn't solve anything is mearly wishful thinking at its worst!"--Rasczak (Michael Ironside) to his students
"Everyone fights, no one quits. If you don't do your job, I'll shoot you myself."--Rasczak to his troops
"You see a bug hole, you nuke it!"--Rasczak to his troops
"M.I. does the dying. Fleet just does the flying."--Rico (Casper Van Dien) referring to the downside of being in the mobile infantry Starship Troopers Reviews: "...The film's main events are its wild bugfights, with hordes of extraordinarily dynamic special-effects creatures....These bizarre marauders are really something to see..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...Entertaining, engaging, exciting....With game, energetic, winsome performances...and effects that live up to the hype..."
-- Christine James, Box Office "...Fascinating....Featuring astonishing effects and some of the most harrowing battle scenes in movie history..."
-- Andrew O'Hehir, Sight and Sound "...Director Paul Verhoeven is back in his subversively nimble ROBOCOP groove with the uproariously cheeky STARSHIP TROOPERS" -- 4 out of 4 stars
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...A letter grade would do a disservice to a movie that sees relentless entertainment and brilliant pop-culture fraud as two sides of the same media coin....The Most Ironic Hollywood Blockbuster Ever Made. See it for yourself and decide..."

Starship Troopers Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Bloody fun! Okay, I know...the science was AWFUL. So call it "fiction", not "science fiction". But consider that the movie was not trying to be scientifically accurate. It was trying to be a good action flick...and it succeeded royally! And if coed showers are in the future, sign me up! By the way, the book was AWESOME. The movie only maintained 2 or 3 major points from the book (asteroid attacks, service required for citizenship, etc). But the rest was creative license. The soldiers in the book wore battle armor with automated weapons attached at the shoulders. There were more species of aliens than just bugs. Still, the movie held it's own as an in your face (and VERY gory) action flick. A must-have for the the "guy" collection. Submitted by Wang Hung Lo (Pensacola, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.85 IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is John Carpenter's foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft and surreal horror. An insurance investigator (Sam Neill) is sent to find a missing author, Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow). As he comes closer to finding the author, things start to change around him, and soon nothing is what it seems. Madness seems to be the normal state of things, while reason and sanity have no place in this new world created by the mind of Sutter Cane. Carpenter plays with changing perspective, making the audience aware thay they too are part of the story, and maybe, just maybe, this is not just make believe. The story is very ambitious in its attempt to put a whammy on the viewer's imagination, but the direction is steady and thoughtful enough to pull it off. Sam Neill is superb in the lead role of the only sane man left on Earth, incredulous to the destruction of reality as he knows it. It is his controlled performance that makes the bizarre events in the film threatening and scary. Jurgen Prochnow is deeply creepy as author and madman Sutter Cane, who's imagination is so vivid it is spilling out of his head into the real world. John Carpenter is known for his scary movies, and he does not fail to deliver with IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS.

$9.69 John Nada (Roddy Piper) is a quiet loner, a drifter who gets work where ever he can find it. While working on a construction site in L.A. and sleeping in a vagrant community at night, John stumbles upon a secret society of alien beings who pose as wealthy and powerful people in human society. John joins a rebel group commited to exposing this conspiracy, and becomes their reluctant leader and the only hope of the human race. Former wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper is outstanding as the unassuming hero, playing the role with understated shock at what he uncovers and stubborn courage when he confronts it. Director John Carpenter laces the film with his trademark blend of humor and horror, making aliens that are hideously arrogant, greedy, and easy to hate, while the humans are confused and desperate in their struggle against them. The world looks a little different at the end of THEY LIVE, and one will never look at billboards, money, or sunglasses the same way again. The film contains the longest, and perhaps most realistic, fist fight in film history. Paying homage to INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, the film was based on the short story EIGHT O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING by Ray Nelson.

Starship Troopers review
$22.09 Banned in Russia for over a decade for its blasphemous portrayal of Nicholas II, Elem Klimov's (COME AND SEE) intense drama brings to life the controversial figure of the "mad monk" who wielded a legendary power over the royal family. Klimov's portrayal is indeed an indictment of the ruling class, depicting the Czar (Anatoli Romashin) as an ineffectual ruler blindly led by the charismatic, power-hungry Grigory Rasputin (Aleksei Petrenko), while the politically decrepit aristocracy degenerated into decadence and hedonism. Arriving at court with a strange healing power that many attributed to hypnotism, Rasputin was the only person capable of treating the Tsar's young heir, stopping his uncontrollable bleeding later recognized as hemophilia. Once his place in the palace was secure, however, the monk embarked upon a downward spiral of sexual vice, drunkenness, and violence that made him many enemies among society's upper echelons. Eventually deciding that Rasputin's power threatened the security of Russia's monarchy, a group of noblemen plotted a demise that would enter history as one of the most fabled murders of all time. Petrenko's performance is nothing less than spectacular, channeling the spirit of Rasputin in a chillingly apt depiction of insanity.
