While Nashville musicians once unabashedly paid their respects to a higher power upon receiving a Grammy, contemporary bluegrass and country prefer hiding from their Protestant roots. On Higher Ground, Paul Williams and Cliff Waldron travel back in time to offer a dozen gospel-tinged songs with bluegrass backing. Indeed, listening to "My Lord Grows Sweeter Each Day" and "Will You Meet Me over Yonder" will convince connoisseurs of country gospel that not much has changed. This is even truer of the a cappella "He Whispered Sweet Peace to Me" and a song like "Another Mile," with its four-part harmony. A number of pieces like Johnnie Masters' "They've Made a New Bible" and the Louvin Brothers' "Where Will You Build" hark back to 1950s gospel radio as Red Shipley points out in the liner notes. Despite this commitment to tradition, tinges of the new-fangled seep into Higher Ground here and there. The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. 1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and prerecord shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life's CD preservation of this amazing treasure trove. The performances are intimate and relaxed, and Williams tackles an amazingly varied set list, singing old mountain ballads, hymns, cowboy tunes, and delivers recitations of parlor poems and other various cautionary tales as well. Born in Arkansas, Johnny Cash began his musical career in the early 1950s, following his discharge from the Air Force. Cash developed his sound with Luther Perkins (lead guitar) and Marshall Grant (bass). Their debut, "Hey Porter"/"Cry! Cry! Cry!" emerged in 1955 on Sun Records followed by "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line." In 1958 Carl Perkins' drummer, W.S. Holland, joined and Cash switched to Columbia Records, and another single, "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," sold half a million. Cash married June Carter in 1968 and they had several hit duets. Solo, Cash recorded AT FOLSOM PRISON, which remains his best album and a contender for the best country record of all time.
