Virtually an icon in the world of jazz, singer Mark Murphy began recording in 1956. At a point in his life when many artists would either retire or try to rehash past glories, Murphy continued to challenge himself and explore new styles. On 2007's LOVE, Murphy interprets the songs of such diverse talents as Alan Jay Lerner, Brit rockers Coldplay, country music legend Johnny Cash, and saxophonist/composer Oliver Nelson. The album also features vibrant, imaginative orchestral arrangements and a cameo appearance from another captain of cool, alto sax veteran Lee Konitz.
Composer: Mark Murphy .JazzTimes (p.105) - "He revisits the past with a sinisterly cunning reworking of 'Stolen Moments'...and an achingly knowing 'Angel Eyes'..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "His voice -- now a rich, resonant bass-baritone -- is a wonderfully expressive instrument, capable of communicating the subtlest of emotional nuances." | | Mark Murphy Once To Every Heart CD (2005)
Love Is What Stays
$15.39 Beyond merely skilled, beyond the horizon of hip, past the narrow classification of "jazz singer," Mark Murphy has, for decades, given listeners breathtaking performances that underscore the very heart of song itself. Once to Every Heart was produced by ace flügelhorn master Till Bronner; it is a collection of torch songs and ballads showcasing the subtle side of Murphy's gift and in essence offering an aural glimpse of its totality. Murphy plays piano and did the vocal, ...

| | Ian Hendrickson-Smith Up In Smoke! CD (2003)
Love Is What Stays
$13.85 Ian Hendrickson-Smith, a fine hard bop altoist, was 29 at the time that he recorded this CD, his debut as a leader. With fine support from pianist David Hazeltine (who has several excellent solos), bassist Barak Mori, and drummer Joe Strasser, Hendrickson-Smith swings on four originals and obscurities and five jazz standards. His tone is a little reminiscent of Jackie McLean's (though not as abrasive) and he comes up with creative ideas in the hard bop tradition, with the low-down ...
| | Trent Summar Horseshoes & Hand Grenades CD (2006) Digipak
Love Is What Stays
$10.09 Country music is known for cornball wordplay, and sometimes for genuinely clever humor. Sarcastic wit, on the other hand, is likely to get you barred from the Grand Ole Opry, not that they care much about the Grand Ole Opry in Texas, which is where Trent Summar (and most of his fellow country-rock wiseguys) come from. So after he blows the barn doors down with his hard-rocking (and hilarious) title track, he happily goes on to have his way with the Bakersfield sound on "Love You," which features a bridge constructed out of a mariachi version of the "Ring of Fire" guitar lick, and to put the "twang" in "twangerrific" with the muscular "Hayride," and to force bluesy rockabilly into the service of one of the nastier kiss-off songs in recent memory. For humor, the pičce de résistance is his version of the George Jones classic "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which starts off as a respectful but lackluster cover and then suddenly morphs into breakneck hardcore punk rock ...
| | Silverchair Young Modern CD (2007) (Import) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Digipak; Australia
Love Is What Stays
$17.95 With 2007's YOUNG MODERN, Australian trio Silverchair move still further away from the derivative grunge sound that typified their early releases. The band's fifth studio album is remarkably ambitious, not least for its impressive roster of sonic architects and collaborators. Producer Nick Launay (Talking Heads), mixer David Botrill (Tool), and legendary arranger Van Dyke Parks all lend their talents to YOUNG MODERN's landscape.
There's not a trace of the band's once prominent guitar-heavy sludge, and even the opening rocker, "Young Modern Station," bounces along with a pop glee. "Straight Lines" soars with melodic, heady bliss, while "If ...
