Recorded at Bradley's Barn, Nashville, Tennesee.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
On his third album, Townes Van Zandt recut three crucial tracks from his debut album, "For The Sake Of The Song," "Waiting Around To Die," and "I'll Be Here In The Morning." It was some indication of the obscurity in which he remained enveloped, but no indication of the quality of his work. (Actually, Van Zandt rerecorded songs from his first album on his later ones because he disliked the earlier recordings.) As usual, his closely observed lyrics touched on desperate themes, notably in tbe mining ballad "Lungs," but they were still highly poetic, especially the album-closing "None But The Rain," which reflected on a failed relationship. Van Zandt's finger-picking was augmented by spare arrangements, usually featuring one added instrument for color, such as a fiddle or flute. (Originally released by Poppy Records in 1969, Townes Van Zandt was reissued by Tomato Records in 1989.) ~ William Ruhlmann
Van Zandt followed 1969's landmark OUR MOTHER THE MOUNTAIN a year later with this equally definitive album. The latter's big production is scaled down considerably here, and the focus is on a much more subdued, folky feel. The gentle acoustic fingerpicking doesn't obscure the sharply observed fatalism of "None But the Rain" or the ominous "Waiting Around to Die," one of Townes' best (and not coincidentally, darkest) compositions.
There are some colorfully scripted Dylanesque epics in the mold of OUR MOTHER's "Why She's Acting This Way" ("For the Sake of the Song" and "Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel," the latter as close to Dylan's great "To Ramona" as anyone will ever get). "Lungs," covered almost 30 years later by Lyle Lovett, is an unforgettably desperate, poetic plea for connection and redemption, whose sheer bleakness would warrant a warning sticker were it not redeemed by the warm, reassuring country waltz "Don't Take It Too Bad."

Recorded at Century Sound Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Andrew Dansby.

On Van Zandt's fourth album his voice hasn't yet attained the weary gravitas that made his later albums so shattering, but his dark, skewed visions of life are already in place. "Tower Song" is one of the minor key laments Van Zandt did so well, delivered with sparse guitar and subtle classical harp. The singer is leaving behind his wife and child, blaming her for the break up, although he admits he's a drunk and unable to communicate with her, except in song. "Where I Lead Me" is a dark folk-rocker that takes another jaundiced look at relationships with his characteristic bleak humor. "Rake" has the feel of a British folk song, the familiar story of an old soul adrift looking back on his youth with longing and regret. It has an epic feel augmented by the string section and a lone French horn. "Nothin'" is a bitter kiss off, a guy who doesn't want nothin' from a departing lover who he says gave him nothin', but there's more than a hint of revenge and rage in the lyric, and Van Zandt's flat, dry singing makes the tune chilling. ...

Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's ...

Bionic
Rosa Mota Bionic CD  (1996) (Import) United Kingdom

Townes Van Zandt
CD $17.09
Punk outfit Rosa Mota release their second album Bionic with the single "Space Junk." The album features Clare Grogan and Dave Simmonds contributing on "This Grudge."
Rosa Mota's second album found the band getting the Steve Albini treatment on production, which at least on a number of songs unsurprisingly finds the quintet even more brusquely rocking out than before. To his credit and the band's, though, it avoids a slew of the paint-by-numbers nature of his mid-'90s production work -- at the least it doesn't feel like either he or the band were aiming at whatever Bush was trying to do in the same year. Ian Bishop and Julie Rumsey again were the core of the group as performers and singers, with Bishop taking a slightly more prominent role (or at least bringing out a bit of a gasping rock & roll growl at points). With Rumsey's sometimes sweet, sometimes sharp voice as a counterpoint, songs like "Scenic Layby" and "Sometimes Narcoleptic" can and do make their points in a series of short, sharp shocks with sudden and sometimes surprising time changes (the latter might be the band's best song ever, a multi-part epic that still sneaks up as much as it roars). It isn't all explosiveness, though, and the orchestrations at various points -- from a quartet rather than a standard Brit-pop orchestration, thankfully -- add some often addictive melancholy to songs like "Frostbitten" and "Angel." The calmer, almost winsome start and verses of ...

Reckless Devotion
Jon Wikstrom Reckless Devotion CD  (2006)

Townes Van Zandt
CD $13.89
Songwriter/Singer Jon Wikstrom got a late start in the music game; he was a 20-year old Charleston, West Virginia native halfway through college at Duke when the music bug bit and he picked up a guitar for the first time. Jon remembers, "I had just taken an end-of-the-school-year trip to Key West with three friends. We all had crammed into a Volkswagen beetle and driven 3,000 miles with maybe one clean shirt each, and cassettes of ten Jimmy Buffett albums to pass the time. In fact, we went to Key West to hang out with Jimmy Buffett. Mr. Buffett was likely not even there, nor had he been informed that four morons were expecting to vacation with him. I returned home powerfully sick of Jimmy Buffett songs. And then about a week later, I realized I was really missing Jimmy Buffett songs - to the point that I decided I needed to buy a guitar right then and start learning to play some of them. So I did." Then, after graduating from Duke (with a degree in history of all things), Wikstrom began to ply his musical craft, playing bars and coffeehouses from West Virginia to Florida before settling into the Washington/Baltimore music scene. He worked on Capitol Hill by day, and by night watched local musicians like Mary-Chapin ...
