| | Townes Van Zandt Flyin' Shoes CD Townes Van Zandt Discography of CDs
After a five-year layoff, Van Zandt returned to the studio for one of his most solid, concise albums. Unlike the compressed singer-in-a-studio sound of his early recordings, FLYIN' SHOES features sympathetic, organic backing from greats like Chips Moman, Jimmy Day Spooner Oldham. This helps Townes' subtly poetic tunes to come across. "When She Don't Need Me" and "No Place to Fall" are elegant love songs that depart form the country-folk style in the manner of DELTA MOMMA BLUES' "You Are Not Needed Now." "Snake Song," "Dollar Bill Blues" and "Rex's Blues" are classic Townes; dark, incisive imagery and simple-but-effective folk-tinged melodies. The title tune is a beautiful ballad that casts a hopeful eye toward spiritual redemption.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Flyin' Shoes
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's trademark.
The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about ...
| | Holy Modal Rounders I Make A Wish For A Potato CD (2001)
Flyin' Shoes
$14.55 Although the label was named for them, Rounder Records does not contain a complete repository of the works of the Holy Modal Rounders. In fact, only the group's 1975 album, Alleged in Their Own Time, and its 1999 reunion disc, Too Much Fun!, were released on Rounder. But due to their marginal commercial appeal and their own inclinations, the Rounders have been inherently unstable as a band through the years, frequently splitting into different configurations, such that members have participated in several other recordings of a like sensibility, including Michael Hurley's Have Moicy, Long Journey, and Snockgrass and Jeffrey Frederich's Spiders in the Moonlight. The band's two founding members, Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber, reunited as Stampfel & Weber for Rounder's Going Nowhere Fast album in 1981, and Stampfel's post-Rounders band the Bottlecaps made Peter Stampfel and the Bottlecaps for the label. All of these albums are drawn upon for this compilation, which therefore presents a comprehensive look at the varied styles and assorted craziness of Rounders music from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. There is, first of all, the original band, dominated by Stampfel and Weber, who draw on traditional folk and old-timey country, but to strange effect. They capture the semi-professional style of '20s hillbilly bands, but they append their own perspective. ...
