A couple things come to mind upon hearing the first few tracks of Five Roses. The first is that it sounds a lot like Yo La Tengo; there's a lot of ringing guitar work and throbbing bass going on, especially on tracks like "Whirrs" and "Hold Your Secrets to Your Heart." The second is that sounds a whole lot like the Beach Boys; it's bouncy and musically ambitious, full of soaring vocal harmonies and echoing snares. Now, this isn't to say that Graham Van Pelt (the man behind Miracle Fortress) is an outright copycat, or that Five Roses suffers under the weight of its influences. On the contrary, the album wears them beautifully; not only that, but it makes for one of 2007's more memorable and original indie pop debuts. Van Pelt is a one-man-band in the spirit of Brian Wilson, and his strength lies in his restraint. Unlike some indie multi-instrumentalists (Sufjan Stevens comes to mind) he doesn't shock and awe the listener with sheer orchestral might; this album soars, but it does so gently. The sonic palette consists of luminous synths, heartbeat-steady basslines (think Yo La Tengo's I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One), Van Pelt's angelic vocals, and swath upon swath of reverb. The lyrics are heartbreakingly simple and they're almost invariably about love, but Five Roses is by no means a saccharine album. Maybe it's because Van Pelt is a genuine guy, or maybe it's just because he's a good songwriter; whatever the case may be, it isn't everyday one comes across an honest, and honestly surprising, set of love songs such as this. ~ Margaret Reges

Five Roses album
$14.49 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves that the band has plenty of room for expression within its rather limited palette of droning organs, succinct drumming and sharp, upturned guitar lines that give new meaning to the term "hook." While this sound comes from the legacy of '80s college rock -- at times suggesting a fusion of the Smiths' witty, bouncy melancholy and the on-the-sleeve passion of Throwing Muses -- and also has ties to some of the other bands remaking new wave and post-punk in their own images, the Organ and Grab That Gun have a freshness that isn't often heard in any kind of rock music. This is partly due to the simplicity of the band's playing; some call it amateurish, although innocent is probably a more apt description. There's also ...
| | Band Of Horses Everything All The Time CD (2006)
Five Roses CD music
$11.65 EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME is the debut release on Sub Pop from Seattle's Band of Horses. Matt Brooke and Ben Bridwell have abandoned the melancholic slow-core of their previous band Carissa's Weird for a brighter, more straightforward indie rock sound with obvious roots in Neil ...

| | National Boxer CD (2007)
Five Roses songs
$9.95 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary "Fake Empire," which combines political and personal themes, and "Mistaken for Strangers," a track that recalls NYC peers Interpol, thanks in part to the punchy approach of shared producer Peter Katis.
And while his presence isn't immediately apparent, indie hero ...
| | Caribou Andorra CD (2007)
Five Roses album
$11.99 Dan Snaith's project, Caribou, has always displayed a great reverence for the splashy opulence of '60s psychedelic-pop. If earlier albums, UP IN FLAMES and MILK OF HUMAN KINDNESS, borrowed liberally from his influences--sounding much like a panoply of carefully crafted snippets from the most blissed-out moments of pop music's past 30 years--ANDORRA polishes ...

| | Rebirth Brass Band We Come To Party CD (1997)
Five Roses music CDs
$15.05 New Orleans brass band music is infectious, good-time music, even when it's played at funerals. Rebirth Brass Band keeps the tradition alive and up-to-date on We Come to Party. One might wonder whether the title is a reference to drugs, but there are no allusions to such debauchery from these seven sincere and religious men. Allusions abound, however, to "Iko, Iko" and Louis Jordan's "Brother, Beware."
Rebirth Brass Band touts a natural high, and provides the means, too. Along with the bass drum and cymbals one expects from a brass band, RBB has brought in Michael Ward on congas to add an Afro-Cuban beat. Virtually every track is upbeat; fatigue is avoided by the clever use of polyphony, usually between the brass instruments, but sometimes between the brass and percussion, as on the title track. The ...

$17.29 Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep, Hollywood, California).
Roy Orbison's Sun period has often been documented, but was never really given its proper critical due until the 21st century with its 20/20 hindsight. The Bear Family label issued a complete Orbison collection from his earliest Teen Kings recordings -- all of them -- to 1965, and other compilations have documented some of the material Orbison recorded for Sun between 1956 and 1958. This set on Varese Sarabande documents ...

Five Roses album
$10.69 Re-forming in 2003 around founding member Steve Battershill, "classic period" drummer Nuts and guitarist Andy Rolfe, and vocalist Beverly Cook Abbott, Lost Cherees' first album in 22 years is one of those so-rare examples of a band picking up precisely where they left off, and then astonishing every ear by proving that they lost absolutely nothing during their absence.
The same fractured pop choruses and rhythms, the same eye for melodic punk shot through with discordant riffs, the same taste for unexpected reggae-tinged interludes -- and that's just the opening "Wake Up Call." Sixteen songs include an amazing ...
