On its 2007 self-titled debut, the Christian screamo ensemble Before Their Eyes doles out fierce anthems of spiritual yearning. While melody does figure into the Ohio-based band's sound (see the gentle introduction of "This Is Redemption, This Is Our Lives Washed Clean"), the group is largely devoted to weighty riffs and throat-shredding vocals, as revealed on "The Journey Down South (Starts with a 2 Step)."

Like many bands hoping to survive the burning wreckage of emo-screamo's Hindenburg, Sacramento, CA's Dance Gavin Dance play the "eclectic" card on their 2007 debut album, Downtown Battle Mountain, an album that verges on the loaded tag of "progressive," it's so far removed from those genres' distant roots in good old-fashioned hardcore. In fact, hardcore's minimalist ethos also couldn't be further from Dance Gavin Dance's unapologetic virtuosity and unorthodox song structures, which encompass ever-shifting time signatures, dizzyingly complex interplay between rhythm and lead guitar licks, and two separate vocalists tackling beauty and the beast roles simultaneously. HOMOGENIC, her latest musical endeavor, finds her plunging headlong into electronica, a form well-suited to her intense, offbeat phrasing and tone.
From the skittering breakbeats and ghostly wails of the opening "Hunter" to the all-out electronic crash that is "Pluto," HOMOGENIC explores the melding of human and machine. The drama of "Bachlorette" finds a lush, rich string section following a tripping electronic beat, giving way to the Icelandic wonder's trademark wail. The juxtaposition of thoroughly modern sounds with conventional elements, such as symphonic arrangements, pipe organ, and accordion, form a central theme, to which HOMOGENIC's title undoubtedly refers. FAITH HEALER is a compilation of tracks recorded by the unusual British rock outfit the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
With so many compilations (vinyl and CD) already on the market, it was refreshing to come across one that did not treat the Sensational Alex Harvey Band as some kind of novelty rock jukebox, committed to nothing more pressing than a succession of idiosyncratic cover versions (most of them culled from The Penthouse Tapes). Indeed, Faith Healer seemingly goes out of its way to avoid that impression, eschewing even the hits "Delilah" and "Runaway" in favor of some of the lesser-trawled corners of the SAHB songbook. Of course a handful of expected nuggets are included, but both Jacques Brel's "Next" and the Cabaret showstopper "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" became such integral cornerstones of the Harvey legend that they might as well have been original compositions.
