Having a singer who can switch between hardcore screaming and melodic singing has become the standard for many metal bands of the early 21st century -- and Matthew McChesney is the gentleman who lends his vocal charm to Hell Within. But while most screamer/singers usually replicate hardcore barking as their "scream" choice, death metal growling can be detected in McChesney's vocals during the heavy parts (while for the melodic bits, Scott Weiland-esque vocals come to mind at times). Hell Within's third release overall, 2007's Shadows of Vanity, sees the group break in a new drummer without missing a beat, as metal and melody crash head on throughout, especially on such tracks as "The Spiral," "Between the Dead and the Deceived," and the title track. While not the most original metal release of 2007, Shadows of Vanity shows that Hell Within can certainly hold their own against the competition on Headbangers Ball. ~ Greg Prato

Shadows Of Vanity
$11.89 Despite their youth, the members of As Blood Runs Black spent several years digesting various influences and honing their chops before recording their 2006 debut, Allegiance -- a situation which largely explains the contradiction between its advanced musicianship but, at times, both immature and convoluted songwriting. The album's enticing and foreboding intro suggests black metal, yet restlessly assembled ensuing tracks like "In Dying Days," "The Brighter Side of Suffering" and "My Fears Have Become Phobias" quickly alert the listener to expect the unexpected, as the musicians fling themselves around a mosh pit propelled by several different metallic ...

Shadows Of Vanity
$15.85 Struck By Lightning was the culmination of Graham Parker's previous two records, where he increasingly began to chronicle domestic tasks and affairs of the married heart. For such an intimate subject, Parker wisely decided to scale back the musical ambition of Human Soul on Struck By Lightning, recording a lean, stripped-down album that relies heavily on acoustic guitars. Appropriately, his lyrics were some of the most concise he has written ...
| | Chart Toppin' Doo Woppin V.1 CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Shadows Of Vanity
$15.75 As a term used to cover the wide array of approaches by vocal harmony groups, doo wop tends to be an over-reaching umbrella that obscures the harder edges common to many of the black vocal groups that emerged in the early '50s, most of which drew on a mix of jump blues, R&B, gospel, and jazz sources to craft material that featured gorgeous harmonies, of course, but also featured a gritty base that was still very much in touch with the blues. Rock & roll, when it emerged toward the end of the decade, would bounce doo wop into the realm of puppy love, but the tracks by the black vocal groups collected here aren't talking about crushes and prom dates, and the rhythms still have some grind to them. Of the 28 sides here, 12 went to the top of the pop charts, and another ten went Top Three, so we're not talking about some grand hidden history, but later doo wop groups sacrificed the bluesy elements inherent in the form for a kind of encompassing sweetness that rounded off all of the rough edges, and that, in the public view, became the definition of doo wop. There are plenty of rough edges still on display on Chart Toppin' Doo Woppin', Vol. 1, though, and the approach of applying sweetness to roughness is a hard mix to beat in sides like the "5" Royales' "Baby, Don't Do It" or the Larks' blues-inflected "Eyesight to the Blind." The Orioles' "Crying in the Chapel" exhibits a kind of resignation that is missing from later ...
| | Brannan Lane Lost Caverns Of Thera CD (2002)
Shadows Of Vanity
$11.39 With Lost Caverns of Thera, Brannan Lane has created some eerily dark ambient/space music. Lost Caverns of Thera is a bit darker than Troposphere, which followed later in 2000, and it's quite different from Lane's 2001 Sleep Cycle but, all and all, Lane has created an exciting work that seems to be a mix of ambient/space music veterans Steve Roach and Robert Rich's more tribal music. Lane seems to be taking a different direction with each and every recording he creates, while growing in leaps and bounds both in areas of production and composition. Lost Caverns of Thera is one of Lane's first forays into ambient/space music, and it certainly foreshadows those master works that would follow. While this isn't a definitive and representative example of Lane's excellent work, it is certainly as good a starting point as any. ~ Matt Borghi
LOST CAVERNS OF THERA (Thera is the Greek word for fear) The volcanic island of Thera or Thira, also known as Santorini, is located in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Asia Minor. The discovery of these caverns is so new that no one has been able to complete the mapping. They were found strictly by accident. Many riches were found, not as in gold and jewels, but great artifacts like animal bones of unknown origins, ancient art and maybe the gateway to Atlantis! The mouth of the caverns is very small, just big enough for a small to medium size person to squeeze through. This might be why it took so long for them to be rediscovered. Once inside the mouth it opens up into a large room with four passages leading in different directions. There is a constant sound of water droplets, and beautiful colored stalactites and stalagmites line the ceiling, walls, and floor. As you travel deeper into the caverns there is no light. Our human eyes need some source of light (even a very small amount) to make them work. In here, without light you can't see your hand right in front of your face! Cavern II has beautiful art and cave drawings that show most of the other caverns, and there are dates back to 900 B.C.! The most intriguing drawing shows that Cavern III has an underwater passage to the lost city of Atlantis, which was believed to have been swallowed up by the sea during a enormous volcanic earthquake in 1500 B.C. "Death From Above" is carved into the passage or hall between Cavern II and III. Stalactites frequently fall from the ceiling and walls. The earth seems to be very unstable there, would be and understatement! The bones found in Cavern IV are creatures of unknown origins. More testing, studying, and excavating is being done to find answers to these mysteries. Cavern V completes a huge circle that ends up back at the mouth of the Cave. Award-winning producer Brannan Lane could calm someone riding a roller coaster with his celestial sound. Relaxing energy pushes its way onto your senses, almost forcing you into a dream-filled coma. The ambient navigator’s warm sonic textures may be the cure for the most severe cases of road rage. – Emusic Editor Lane’s music can be heard on DATELINE NBC, SPIKE TV, UNIVISION, SONY PLAY STATION II, as well as outstanding syndicated radio shows like "STAR'S END", "MUSICAL STARSTREAMS", "E-MUSIC", "ECHEOS” and the #2 most popular Contemporary Music program on NPR (National Public Radio) "MUSIC FROM THE HEARTS OF SPACE".
