| | Planet X Quantum CD Planet X Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
It took Planet X five years to come up with a follow-up to MoonBabies, and the first thing fans are bound to notice is the absence of guitarist Tony MacAlpine. On this, the group's third studio album, Planet X is presented as a duo -- leader/keyboardist Derek Sherinian and drummer Virgil Donati -- rounded up by guest bassists (Jimmy Johnson and Rufus Philpot) and guitarists (mostly Brett Garsed, also fusion legend Allan Holdsworth on two tracks). You may also find the music veering a little more into fusion territory and less into the metal-fusion genre established by the Magna Carta label -- and all for the better. In fact, Quantum is a quantum leap above previous Planet X releases: stronger compositions (tighter and less flashy), more diversity across the album, better-dosed excitement. The resulting music is less in your face but just as satisfying, since it welcomes repeated listens. The fierceness presented as the band's core is its manifesto of sorts ("a band that played so fiercely, it would strike fear..." stated the press release for the group's first album), giving way to a more strategic use of intensity and better-crafted songs, as "Alien Hip Hop" brilliantly illustrates. This album opener simply keeps on building and building over the course of its seven minutes. "Matrix Gate" and "Space Foam" are vintage Planet X tracks -- complex time signatures, jammy feel, and a drummer that just won't quit. On the other hand, you have moodier pieces like "Kingdom of Dreams" or the Holdsworth feature "Desert Girl," laden with jazzy stacked chords and subtler progressions. The only piece that does not quite work out is the closing "Quantum Factor," its stop-start sections failing to form a cohesive whole; here, the band falls back to its early excesses. That minor flaw aside, Quantum is a surprisingly mature album, the kind that could redefine Sherinian's career. Recommended. [Quantum was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ François Couture

| | Type O Negative World Coming Down CD (1999)
Quantum music CDs
$15.05 Three full years after their last album, Type O Negative finally returned with World Coming Down, a record that might alienate some fans brought on board with October Rust but which actually stands with the best of their work. Many of the songs most closely resemble the dirgier parts of Bloody Kisses -- still melodic, but not as immediately accessible, and taken at crawling tempos that would give Black Sabbath on downers a run for their money. So even if the songs do catch on after a couple of listens, they aren't as bright (relatively speaking, of course) as a great deal of October Rust, in terms of both music and subject matter. That's fine, because World Coming Down seems like more natural territory; even in spite of its many fine moments, October Rust felt like a move toward accessibility that worked in fits but didn't quite achieve everything it wanted to. World Coming Down features most of the Type O Negative staples: sly goth sendups in "Creepy Green Light" and "All Hallows Eve," which happily wallow in their vampire-movie imagery; another catchy, darkly erotic goth-girl fantasy, "Pyretta Blaze," about the blurry lines between sexual submission and self-obliterating obsession; and, of course, a continuation of the odd-cover-choice gimmick with what's actually a pretty appropriate Beatles medley ("Day Tripper," "If I Needed Someone," and "I Want You [She's So Heavy]"). But there are some real surprises on the record, songs when Steele ...
| | Cinerama Torino CD (2002)
Quantum songs
$14.65 Parr Street, Liverpool, England; The VIP Lounge, Penzance, England.
Despite no longer being an angsty whippersnapper, David Gedge shows no signs of slowing down or tempering his biting mix of the bittersweet, the dark, and the seedy, as it relates to all the upswings and downfalls of love, lust, and infidelity. At this point, there's very little doubting that, at age 70, Gedge will be penning witty songs about the tempting nurse who rubs VapoRub across his chest with such titillating flair. His third studio album with partner Sally Murrell and friends as Cinerama isn't all that different stylistically from 2000's Disco Volante, shifting back and forth from elegant chamber pop to fiery indie rock at the drop of a hat. For the most part, this is more of the same, which disciples will have no qualms about. Songs like "Estrella" and "Starry Eyed" have the deft melodic tugs and gushing guitars that won Gedge's previous band so many hopelessly romantic fans. The brief breaks in the formula hopefully show glimpses of the future. "Airborne" is a beautiful Baroque pop song, full of nothing but strings that accompany what could be Gedge's most elegant and touching vocal turn yet. At just over two minutes, the song is as wickedly fleeting as the relationship ...
| | Gift Of Gab Fourth Dimensional Rocketships Going Up CD (2004)
Quantum album
$11.79 It's long been clear that Gift of Gab has much more to say than he's been afforded on Blackalicious full-lengths. A rapping tongue-twister, he not only sprays syllables but proves surprisingly articulate (and humble), filling Blackalicious releases with songs that cover personal foibles and social issues alike, but relate everything on a global scale. His first solo album, 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up, is slightly more organic and mellow than Blackalicious material, with sinewy basslines winding themselves around their beats, and atmospheric samples ...
| | Sarah West Sanctuary CD (2001)
Quantum CD music
$22.79 Sarah WestHealer, Teacher, Author, Visionary & International Recording ArtistMs. West travels internationally presenting at conferences, teaching, giving Healing and Counseling Sessions, giving TV/Radio interviews and offering Sacred Concerts for Innerpeace and offers goodwill work for ecological directives and helps underprivileged children through orphanages and schools. She has spent this past year in South America, largely in Peru. Currently, she is touring in North America and will in Great Britain and Europe following.Sarah West is one of those truly rare phenomena that Divine Providence elects as a pontifex, or bridge, to span the gap between actuality and possibility, between what humankind believes to be true and what is sensed intuitively to be true. This is no small matter. The greatest minds of every culture and of every age unanimously speak of another world, that to truly live is to surpass oneself, folding back to that astonishing part of us that partakes of this still point.Sarah West gives audible life to this stillness, this possibility, both through her singing and speech. As a result, she is able to touch the deepest recesses of the heart, moving them into alignment with the world behind appearances, the world, which the greater part of humanity yearns for now as never before.Stated differently, Sarah West is about that uncommon depth, the stuff of genius which we all recognize immediately, that comes along in a rarefied embodiment to remind us all what this life is and what it is for. As a concert veteran of some forty years, and as someone who, himself, has performed with some of the very greatest ...
