Helleraser album
$13.35 Longtime King's X fans can attest, quite a few tracks from early in the trio's career had gone unreleased. With many of the songs never properly recorded (only existing as demos or live bootlegs), these early tracks were in danger of going forever unnoticed, until the boys decided to do something about it. Entering the studio in 2002, the band finally recorded 14 of these rare compositions, resulting in the release of Black Like Sunday a year later. The first release by the group via its own Brop! label (distributed by Metal Blade), Black Like Sunday unsurprisingly sounds quite a lot like the group's early works (the straight-ahead rockers Out of the Silent Planet and Gretchen Goes to Nebraska), before the group began stretching out a bit more on latter releases. Standouts include such meaty riff rockers as the title track, "Finished," and "Bad Luck," as well as the more ...
| | King Diamond Puppet Master CD (2003) Bonus DVD
Helleraser CD music
$10.79 This release includes a bonus DVD featuring an interview with King Diamond.
Kim Bendix Petersen, better known as King Diamond, has built an empire out of wailing spirits, singing spiders, and voodoo priestesses. His 11th full-length ghost story, The Puppet Master, centers around an unfortunate man, his girlfriend, and a husband and wife team of puppet masters as they abuse and torture their subjects somewhere in Budapest. Diamond wisely forgoes his usual cheeseball spoken-word intro and simply launches into "Midnight," a melodic dirge that ranks high amongst his huge -- and often inconsistent -- body of work. The brutal "Emerencia" features stellar guitar work from Andy LaRocque -- the thread that binds each and every King Diamond album -- and "The Ritual" aptly deals with the popular heavy metal theme of souls burning in Hell -- lyrical prowess has never been his forte. The remainder of the record is serviceable goth-metal filled with oaths and omens, blood and sacrifice, and one ill-conceived Christmas song. King Diamond has reached a stage in his career where evil has begun to fade into novelty, and The Puppet Master resonates ...
| | Candlemass CD (2006)
Helleraser music CDs
$10.65 The arduous three-year process of reuniting Candlemass' "classic" lineup had all the makings of a psychodrama: one where an innocent wedding-day jam incredibly led to sporadic live performances; then rather noncommittal songwriting sessions that progressed into the recording of actual demos; and after everything fell apart at the last minute due to the usual "irreconcilable differences," a just as unexpected about-face that allowed the album in question to suddenly emerge in 2005! In other words, unlike so many band reunions, ...

| | Uriah Heep Wake The Sleeper CD (2008)
Helleraser album
$13.59 Although Uriah Heep is known for its extensive personnel changes, its lineup has been stable since the mid-'80s; unfortunately, that stability coincided with the band's commercial decline (its last album to chart in the U.S. came in 1983, its last in its native U.K., 1985). So, no one outside the group's fan base noticed that the quintet of founding member and guitarist Mick Box, drummer Lee Kerslake (1971-1978, 1982-2007), bassist Trevor Bolder (who joined in 1977, left during the band's hiatus in the early '80s, and returned a couple of years after its re-formation), singer Bernie Shaw, and keyboard player Phil Lanzon (both of whom joined in the mid-'80s) remained in place through numerous world tours and the studio albums Raging Silence (1989), Different World (1991), Sea of Light (1995), and Sonic Origami (1998). Since then, a series of live albums have testified to Uriah Heep's continued existence. In January 2007, Kerslake bowed out due to health problems and was replaced by the capable Russell Gilbrook. Wake the Sleeper, Uriah Heep's first ...

| | Dead Soul Tribe Murder Of Crows CD (2003)
Helleraser album
$14.55 A Murder of Crows, the second album by Dead Soul Tribe, carries further the ideas introduced in the group's debut. Devon Graves' lyrics determine the atmosphere shifts in the music (pretty dark in general) and his guitar drives the band into progressive metal territory. This conceptual album revolves around the idea that crows carry the souls of the dead to the afterlife. So what happens to souls that crows were unable to get to? This plot can lead to very routine places, but Graves develops it intelligently and without letting it become a prison. Lyrics are occasionally pretentious, but in general they work well with the guitar-heavy rock of the band (the lineup has been augmented by Roland "Rollz" Kerschbaumer on rhythm guitar, for extra crunch). The opener, the two-part "Feed," sets the parameters very quickly, presenting the soft and rough sides of Dead Soul Tribe. After that, there won't be any surprises, but you will encounter a few strong melodies, especially in "The Messenger," "Crows on the Wire," and "I'm Not Waving." For ...
