Those who last checked in with U.K. pub-rock hero Nick Lowe back when he was turning out breathless power-pop gems like "Heart of the City" and "Cruel To Be Kind" may be shocked at the stylistic contrast of AT MY AGE. However, anyone who's been following his career since the 1990s knows that his latter-day work revolves around a sharply constructed amalgam of soul, country, and pop/jazz standards, delivered with an understated, slow-burn feel. That's the order of the day on this album, and from the sardonic "I Trained Her To Love Me" to the uncharacteristically optimistic "Hope For Us All," Lowe is in top form, pausing in the creation of perfectly crafted tunes only to put a new gleam on Charlie Feather's rockabilly nugget, "A Man in Love."
Personnel: Nick Lowe (electric bass); Steve Donnelly (guitar); Martin Winning (clarinet); Matt Holland (flugelhorn); Geraint Watkins (organ); Matt Radford (double bass); Robert Treherne (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Chrissie Hynde (vocals); Bob Loveday (viola); Nick Payne (baritone saxophone); Chris Barber (trombone); Bill Kirchen (6-string bass); Neil Brockbank (unknown instrument); Linnea Scensson, Anna Farvey (background vocals).
Rolling Stone (p.72) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "On his first record in six years, this proto-punk icon keeps it terrifically mellow without getting mushy in the head." Spin (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] soul-drenched, horn-inflected labor of lust....AGE is full of keepers..." Entertainment Weekly (p.136) - "[A] finely honed collection, which is as musically sweet...as it is lyrically venomous." -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Lowe has transported himself to Memphis and Nashville to create a set of songs reminiscent of such dignitaries as Al Green, Joe South, Glen Campbell and possibly even Dean Martin." CMJ (p.46) - "[H]is raspy voice is complemented perfectly with soulful horns, country twang and a bit of good ol' fashioned rockabilly." Dirty Linen (p.76) - "In short, he's found a way to orchestrate a carefully crafted version of Americana that's lush while still sounding simple..." Nick Lowe At My Age Songs At My Age Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Back in fine form! This new Nick Lowe offering is an eclectic mix of Country,Blues, Rock, and Jazz yet still has those amusing,irony-filled lyrics of his early Power-Pop albums such "Pure Pop For Now People"aka"Jesus of Cool" and "Labor of Lust". Most of the songs are simply great Nick Lowe songs(he does a couple of covers)and you'll want to hear the whole thing in one sitting. like fine wine Nick Lowe gets better with age Another excellant set of tunes in the same manner as his last 2 releases, Dig My Mood, and The Convincer.Nick offers up songs in a style combinging soul, r&b, and country, with his always insightful and witty lyrics telling of loves won and lost. Nick Lowe is back! Best album since 1994's "The Impossible Bird", Nick's new album "At My Age" is chock full of hip songs, covers and his own country / rockabilly style. The best songs are Long Limbed Girl, People Change (with Chrissie Hynde) and Not Too Long Ago.
Nick Lowe covers Charlie Feathers' The Man In Love; Joe Stampley & The Uniques' Not Too Long Ago and John M. Virgin's Feel Again.
Nick's backing band has been upgraded to include Matt Holland on Trumpet, Martin Winning on Sax and Clarinet and he even gets the venerable Chris Barber to add his Trombone on The Other Side of the Coin.
Hope For Us All and People Change have the old Motown-sound and will hook you for certain. Feel Again has the best lyric hook - If you ever get the feeling I don't love you, Feel Again.
The Other Side of the Coin sounds like Old Blue Eyes or Crystal Gayle.
Most of the songs are vintage Nick Lowe songwriting, taking you back to his days when he was married to Carlene Carter.
The lead song - A Better Man - sounds like it could have been played in a saloon in the 1800's; the backup singers only add to that feeling.
Rome Wasn't Built In A Day - Nick hasn't lost his ability to write songs!
Some songs sound like they could have been included on The Convincer, Impossible Bird or even Party Of One.
If there was any singles, start with People Change, Long Limbed Girl and Not Too Long Ago. Submitted by statsporter4 (Glen Burnie, MD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.55 Nick Lowe's first album threw down the gauntlet in grand form--a baker's dozen of "pure pop for now people" (which is, in fact, what a nervous Columbia Records retitled the album for its stateside release). Lowe was charting regularly in his English homeland, and though he didn't ...

Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering abundance.
Though they produced several excellent albums, Creedence was predominantly ...
